Autoimmune diseases are medical conditions in which the immune system has gone awry by attacking the body's own organs and tissues, instead of protecting them from foreign invaders.
Conventional medicine cannot cure autoimmune diseases. This is an indisputable fact. What conventional medicine can do about immunological disorders is to control the symptoms caused by an overactive immune system with medications instrumental in making the immune system less potent and thereby ameliorating the symptoms.
There are reasons why conventional medicine cannot cure autommune diseases.
First of all, there are many types of immunological abnormality, with the more common ones like graves' disease, rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes type 1, multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, and lupus, among many others; it is estimated that there are as many as 80 to 100 autoimmune diseases, with causes relatively unknown and virtually no cure. The reason for the presence of so many autoimmune disorders is that some of these diseases demonstrate immunological abnormality, although autoimmunity may or may not play a pivotal part.
Autoimmune diseases evolve from a dysfunctional autoimmune system. Given that the autoimmune system itself is a complex and complicated system involving the whole body, not just any specific body part or organ, diseases that develops from a weakened or compromised immune system may come in many different forms with many different symptoms, and thus making a cure difficult, if not impossible.
To cure any disease, the cause or causes must be identified first. In autoimmune diseases, there are many causes, which are difficult to identify. They can be due to the genes, the environment, emotional stress, allergies; as a matter of fact, the real cause or trigger of autoimmunity still remains relatively unknown. Without identifying a definitive cause of autoimmunity, designing a treatment plan or obtaining a cure through drugs is often difficult.
In conventional medicine, the mainstream treatment aims at depressing the immune system with drugs, such as corticosteroids, or with proteins that block specific parts of the immune system, such as interferons. This is where the fallacy and inefficacy of the treatment lies. There is a Chinese saying: "Do not avoid the worms by cutting off your toes." Apparently, that is exactly what conventional medicine is doing to treat autoimmune diseases: by suppressing the immune system. It is like you find there are insurgents within a unit of the police force, and you disarm the whole unit, instead of identifying the villains; the police are supposed to protect the public with guns, but you take away the very weapons they need so that they would not cause any trouble. Suppressing the immune system is a passive and ineffective approach to autoimmunity.
In autoimmune diseases, the immune system is attacking the tissue because it is the unhealthy tissue that causes the initial attack. Once the tissue is targeted and attacked, the immune system "remembers" it, and continues to attack it. Therefore, using medications, such as prednisone, to suppress the immune system may seem to work initially, because supressing the immune system also slows down the attack. But as soon as the medications are reduced, the attack comes back with a vengeance, because the tissue has become further degraded and more unhealthy. The immune system is supposed to protect the body from foreign invaders. Therefore, to incapacitate the immune system so that it will not attack itself is not really the solution to the problem. To address the issue is to strengthen the tissue so that it will not be targeted in the first place, instead of lowering the potency of the immune system as a means to reduce the severity of the attack. In order to cure autoimmune diseases, holistic healing of the body and the mind is a pre-requisite.
