Precisely What Qualifies As Interior Designs?

As often happens in detailing objects, features or concepts, phrases are interchanged to mean the same, so also is the situation in 'interior designs'.

Is the proper term to be using 'Interior designs' or maybe 'interior decorating'? What is the big difference in meaning? Well, as per the The South African Institute of the Interior Design Professions (IID), you will find there's a difference. According to the Institute, an interior designer is an architect that completed a 5 year tertiary course in interior design at the University of Pretoria. By law only such particular person may use the phrase interior architect/designer. Interior designers recognize, research and resolve problems regarding the function and the quality of the interior environment. The afore-going is certainly the purpose of an architect as this function, in essence, has nothing to with the design aspects of an interior, but with the design difficulties of an interior, such as the design and technical drawing preparation of a site, while sticking to building regulations in the interest of public safety and health.

An interior decorator, on the other hand, is usually interested in the functional layout and adorning of an interior space and applies beautifying principles to the room in order to enhance the area.

It is also obvious that the roles of an interior decorator and that of an interior designer frequently will overlap as both functions attempt at a room or house or building, but there is an essential distinction in roles.

Even though it is clear from the previously mentioned that the two functions of interior designs and interior decorators differ in their expected output, it's also clear that in instances they have to co-exist in order to achieve the wanted effect.

One could assume that in the example of new buildings an interior designer/architect would already have concluded their role and the work for the interior decorator would be to 'colour-in' a given pallet. With regards to re-decorating or enhancing a current house or building it is predicted that the interior designer and interior decorator would work hand in hand to be able to give you the best result of what the customer had envisioned.

To be totally fair to interior decorators, it should be mentioned that their interests are overseen by South African Guild for Interior Decorators (SAGID), although all references in connection with this refer to both "decorators" and "designers" although IID claims to be only body representing interior architects/designers associated with interior designs. A bit perplexing to say the least, but at least one realizes that there are two functions involved and who represents who is probably not a public concern but that of the applicable industry experts.

The most important thing in this issue is to understand who to contact for which function when you are about to bring about a make-over of a room or home in total - structural and re-decorating changes - or merely to re-decorate, i.e. replace household furniture and curtains etc. Whatever the undertaking that you visualize may be it is quite clear that rather than you attempting the project yourself, it may be of great benefit to you to call in the professionals.
