Clogged Southeast Asia airports hinder airlines

It's a scene repeated endlessly at most of Southeast Asia's main airports ? planes forced to circle overhead or idle on the tarmac and travelers stuck in long lines at immigration desks, security checkpoints and baggage carousels.

  1. Don't miss these Travel stories

    1. Video of toddler's airport pat-down goes viral

A recently-posted video of a 3-year-old boy ? wearing a cast and sitting in a wheelchair ? shows a TSA officer performing a pat-down at a Chicago-area airport and swabbing the toddler's cast and his wheelchair.

    5. Smithsonian features 'The Art of Video Games'

And it's likely to get worse in capitals like Kuala Lumpur, Jakarta, Bangkok and Manila in years to come as overcrowded airports and outdated infrastructure are twinned with a huge spike in the number of aircraft in the region.

Southeast Asian carriers have ordered $47 billion worth of aircraft for the coming decade but the deals could be under threat because of the inability of airports to keep pace. That could be a blow to manufacturers like Boeing and Airbus.

"You can buy as many aircraft as you like but if the infrastructure does not keep up then you are going to see a degraded service that may prevent you from executing plans to grow the airline," Andrew Herdman, director general of the Association of Asia Pacific Airlines, told Reuters.

The problem could force low-cost carriers such as Malaysia's AirAsia Bhd and Indonesia's privately held Lion Air ? the world's biggest buyers of passenger jets ? to delay or even cancel some orders from Airbus and Boeing.

Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta International Airport now serves more than 51 million passengers a year, more than twice its design capacity when it was built in the mid-1980s.

Bangkok's main Suvarnabhumi Airport is often beset by two-hour immigration queues and is running over capacity less than six years after it opened, which led Thailand's government to encourage low-cost carriers to move to the old Don Muang Airport to help ease congestion.

Passengers can wait for hours at Kuala Lumpur's overcrowded budget terminal, the hub for AirAsia. After clearing immigration lines that can be at least 50 people long, the walk to the plane at the tarmac can be hundreds of meters with only a strip of corrugated steel overhead as cover against the elements.

With pressure from AirAsia and scenes of chaotic check-ins, government-linked operator Malaysia Airports is rushing to complete another budget terminal that is due to be up and running by April 2013.

Projected construction costs have nearly doubled to 3.9 billion ringgit ($1.27 billion) as the planned capacity of the new airport has been expanded to 45 million passengers a year from an initial plan of 30 million.

Time is money
Jakarta's airport is infamous for planes sitting for nearly an hour on the tarmac before take-off or circling overhead as they await their turn to land. One-hour flights between Singapore and the Indonesian capital can easily drag to two hours or more because of the overcrowded runway.

The hundreds of bankers and executives who fly regularly from Jakarta to Singapore on Monday mornings need to leave home in the dark to catch a 6 a.m. flight and often they still get caught in traffic jams on the toll road to the airport.

That has led to tense times for airline executives dealing with what they politely refer to as "influential" passengers who get to the airport late or get stuck in traffic.

Airline sources said these passengers do not hesitate to call them or even the chief executive on their mobile phones to ask for the plane to wait for them.

"It is a common problem," one of the sources said. "We could never entertain these kinds of requests unless they are the president or the vice president of Indonesia. But some customers can be quite impolite and scream at us."

The number of low-cost carriers (LCC) and their routes have expanded rapidly in Southeast Asia over the last 10 years. Analysts and industry executives see more growth ahead due to a lack of reliable alternatives and strong economic growth.

"Ten years ago, the airports in this region would probably not have foreseen that LCC demand could be as strong as it is today," Chin Yau Seng, chief executive officer of Singapore-based budget carrier Tiger Airways, told Reuters.

Airport congestion makes it tougher for carriers to keep their on-time performance and pushes up operating costs as planes waste fuel waiting to take off or land.

"If this problem persists for the long run, airlines in general will have to take into account all the additional costs that they have to incur and pass them on to customers," Edward Sirait, a director at Lion Air, told Reuters.

"If customers cannot accept those additional costs then airlines, whoever they are, will have to rethink their investment decisions and spending."

Lion recently firmed up an order for 230 Boeing 737s worth $22.4 billion, eclipsing the record for the world's biggest commercial aircraft deal set by AirAsia when it signed up to buy 200 Airbus A320neo jets for $18 billion.

Despite the growth and big orders, Southeast Asia remains a market that has been under served by carriers.

Con Korfiatis, vice president of Garuda Indonesia's budget carrier Citilink, said only 300 single-aisle jets serve the country's population of 230 million, compared with 3,000 in the United States, which has 310 million people.

Boeing sees Asia-Pacific carriers as the biggest buyers of planes over the 20-year period to 2030 as they are expected to acquire 11,450 passenger jets valued at $1.5 trillion ? more than a third of global demand.

Racing against the clock
A number of airports in Southeast Asia are expanding but some industry watchers say the efforts may not be enough to keep up with additional capacity and demand.

Standard & Poor's analyst Shukor Yusof said Indonesia and the Philippines are among the laggards in developing facilities for airlines, while Singapore and Malaysia tend to move ahead.

"Malaysia has done a fairly good job in managing and operating various airports," he said. "Indonesia certainly lacks the infrastructure to meet the increase in capacity with its domestic carriers expanding and acquiring new aircraft."

Singapore's Changi Airport plans to build a fourth terminal that will boost total capacity to 82 million passengers a year from the current 73 million when it is completed in 2017.

Despite Changi's reputation for planning ahead, the Center for Asia Pacific Aviation (CAPA) said the fourth terminal might not be enough to meet the expected surge in air travel.

"A third runway and a fifth terminal will eventually be needed for Singapore to maintain its status as a leading hub," CAPA said in a recent report, adding those two things would have to be ready by the end of this decade.

Changi's average annual passenger growth has been 12 percent in each of the past two years, far higher than the average for the past seven years of 8 percent.

That momentum carried on in January with an annual growth rate of 12.1 percent and in February with 11.2 percent.

"At 12 percent per annum growth rate, Changi would reach the post-Terminal 4 capacity figure of 82 million in 2016, just as Terminal 4 finally opens. Even based on 8 percent rate, a fifth terminal would be needed by the end of this decade," CAPA said.

At Jakarta's Soekarno-Hatta, a major overhaul is in the works. It introduced a third terminal last year as it looks to boost capacity to 62 million passengers per year by 2014, a substantial jump from the 51 million the clogged airport now handles.

It also plans a third runway and fourth terminal that could potentially triple its capacity, measured by aircraft movement, but the plan has been hindered by land acquisition issues that might force authorities to build an entirely new airport elsewhere.

In the meantime, travelers must just do their best.

"Your job as a passenger who is flying out from Jakarta is as complicated as the pilot," said one executive at a European investment bank who asked not to be identified.

"You need to check the weather, the traffic warnings on the radio and other things before you leave your home or the hotel."

Trousers with attitude show resistance is futile

Paul Marks, senior technology correspondent

1st-pic-06-Compass.jpg

Compass by Lawrence Malstaf

I am wearing cyborg trousers. And they are angry, totalitarian trousers. When they sense that I?m walking in forbidden zones, or I dare to approach another human being, a motor-driven weight swings violently around my waist, stopping suddenly to force me off balance, to cajole me into walking in another direction. I can fight it - but the weight shift produces a powerful and uncomfortable wrenching force. It?s much easier not to resist.

Titled Compass, this wearable robotic ?orientation device? is one of the interactive exhibits at Robots and Avatars, an exhibition at the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology (FACT) in Liverpool, Merseyside. Along with London design company Body>Data>Space and Slovenian art collective Kibla, FACT has put together a show revealing some of the ways robots and on-screen avatars could change our lives, as the borders between our physical and virtual lives begin to blur.

The work of Belgium-based artist Lawrence Malstaf, Compass looks peculiar, like an inside-out car wheel; the alloy wheel rim is on the outside and a tyre?s inner tube lines its interior. I stepped inside it and hoisted it up to waist height, whereupon Malstaf?s colleague Tom Kok switched on a pump, inflating the inner tube so that it fitted me tightly. With a couple of supporting braces fastened over my shoulders I was ready to go.

I felt like I was wearing a wrap-around version of a cinema ice cream vendor?s tray. Resting my forearms in two half drainpipes handily provided to protect the wearer's limbs from the weights whizzing around the wheel rim, I pressed the start button and began to wander around a dark, square room. Malstaf has placed magnetic-field-generating coils beneath some of the carpet tiles, which produce ?forbidden zones? that Compass senses, and interprets as off limits to me. In addition, infrared sensors tell the device when I try to associate with humans - something else that?s off limits. When I transgress its rules, it tries to throw me of course with haptic compulsion. After a while I get the message and by tentatively exploring the space I?m in, I learn from the robot?s responses how to use it without hassle.

Crude though it is, it was intriguing to have a robotic technology attempt to control me in this way. With location-aware technology proliferating, could something like this, in an offender-monitoring tag or anklet, one day make life difficult for criminals? And why "kettle" demonstrators if you could slap these on the ringleaders and steer them where you want? Compass embodies a concept we might, or at least ought to, be familiar with - a technology that it is easier not to resist. The realisation that giving in to the machine is a lot less hassle than resisting it echoes the way millions of us have already grudgingly accepted a host of invasive technologies for the sake of an easier life. Many of us resign ourselves to Facebook?s baffling privacy settings and risk ID theft, sign up to Google?s free services which, post-hoc, have now all been linked to profile us, or simply own a smartphone stuffed with free apps that mine contacts data, because it is just too hard to do things another way. Will we cave just as easily to robotic invasions? Probably.

Putting control firmly back in human hands, a static robot model perched on a plinth presents an entertaining idea. Called RoboVox, it?s a downscaled version of this?eight-metre-high monster robot that?s been touring Europe. It receives text messages and a computer inside the robot converts your SMS to speech, voiced in a slightly-bored-voice-of-doom patois with red LEDs across its "mouth" illuminating every syllable. Creator Martin Bricelj hopes people will get it to voice ?your statement, protest or declaration of love?. RoboVox is aiming to give a voice back to people whose voices usually get ?lost in the sound of the mass?, using more technology to combat the depersonalising effect of information overload.

2nd-pic-ada-02print.jpg

ADA by Karine Smigla-Bobinski

But this focus on empowering the individual is notably lacking from some of the other exhibits. ADA, by Karina Smigla-Bobinski, is described as an ?analogue drawing prosthetic?, which aims to create a crowdsourced set of images from the collective movements of FACT visitors. The transparent plastic helium balloon - four metres in diameter - is covered in 10-centimetre-long spikes made of coal. The idea is that visitors bounce ADA off the walls (this is great fun by the way, and involves much ducking as the ball whizzes past with its spiky coal pencils spinning), so the coal impacts make random marks on the papered walls. It?s a very low-tech way of coding for an image, says Smigla-Bobinski, so she named it after Ada Lovelace, co-worker and programmer of Charles Babbage?s 19th-century mechanical, cogwheel-based proto-computer, The Difference Engine. As you enter the room, ADA is floating in the space before you. It?s a cool idea, and one I?d describe as "off the wall" - if it wasn?t also off the floor.

A locally-developed exhibit called MeYouAndUs requires less active interaction. The best way to describe it is a time-delayed video mirror. A camera shoots the crowd in one of the gallery?s rooms and these images are shown on an oversized LCD TV after a time delay. With other effects, such as speeding up the delayed action intermittently, you get an engrossing and slightly unpredictable result that it?s hard to stop watching. On a second screen, people arriving in the room see video of their head, chest, midriff, legs and feet chopped and swapped with those of many other visitors.

This modern live video take on bendy fairground mirrors is insanely popular. ?People really, really love it - there?s something weirdly compelling about it. People are fascinated by their own image and their identities being combined,? says FACT director Mike Stubbs, who?s also a film maker. And they?re planning to go global - FACT plan to link MeYouAndUs to a gallery in Ghana, allowing identities from multiple countries to be merged to get ?very diverse communities interacting,? says Stubbs.

If people can adore an installation that hijacks their live image - mocks it even, by mashing it up with those of others - something odd is happening. Has the latter-day prevalence of CCTV got us caving into image-related invasions of privacy without a thought? It seems the time for resistance passed before we even noticed we had a choice.

Robots and Avatars is exhibited at the Foundation for Art and Creative Technology,? Liverpool, UK and runs?until 27 May 2012

Senior Companion Franchising Opportunities

FranchisingThe new medical procedures and healthy lifestyles are allowing people to live longer than any time in the past, putting many people trying to find ways to adjust to the demands of aging. Now that the hippie generation is soon grow old, the number of senior citizens will only get bigger and bigger. The franchise owners care for older adults can take advantage of the boom in population and be in place to join in the market for number one franchise in a very long time. Senior care franchise opportunities can also be called in the care of home business opportunities and also provide home care for adults who may have physical or mental problems not related to age, and very ill, that require constant attention. With the thousands who need to care that has never been a better time to buy in a senior care business that right now.

Almost all nursing care opportunities or adult franchise home based franchise opportunities can be, because often times there is specialized care home customers. Aged care franchise businesses are one of the best opportunities for home based business that can be controlled in a simple home office, while still growing rapidly, perhaps even faster than any other home based business . If a person likes to stay home long enough to work since he knows the importance of staying at home in times of sickness, that understanding makes the owner better care universal suffrage.

Part of owning and running a successful business of elderly care is to provide the company and for a disabled person to have someone to talk is priceless. Many older people often get tired of being old and sick and speeding their way to leave home and go to a nursing home. When a person is talking and listening to eliminating some of the stress of loneliness. A lot of service staff to take several people to customer care so the time together is more rewarding for everyone involved. Something to consider when running a business like this is the home care business is taking to match personalities to avoid conflicts.

Business franchise for the business desire to succeed at providing the highest quality education programs of the franchise, and franchise high level of care are no exception. As with all business owners good care franchise partner must know the rules of business operation, including but not limited to, customer service, how to manage the daily operations and record keeping. Another very important part of running a business is hiring honest employees, employees to be the homes of customers. Before buying a franchise to see that the franchise opportunity offers the best training franchise that includes a lot of time to learn the ins and outs of the business, good materials to learn and to use when seeking a little later, and the first interactions hand. Before buying a franchise make sure it meets all training needs, and if a franchise does not offer first class training that is terrible.

Things to watch are the departments of marketing support and ongoing support. Marketing can be very difficult to understand, but there is little reason for a business entrepreneur to address marketing, precisely because a large number of franchises is responsible for advertising its franchisees the opportunity. Franchise companies usually have the most reliable data to spread the word about a local business too. With an adult care referral business is a great way to get new jobs and a high level of care-free references are very common. department is well supported with good franchise opportunity, including those belonging to this category of the franchise. The company is there to help and want to do well, as much as you do, that?s why the franchise comapny assists the franchisee in the way as the employer finds new problems and obstacles.

There is little chance that a person can put their money in providing the opportunity to help those less fortunate. If you can succeed, while at the same time, making the world around you a little more pleasant to get financial benefits. The long hours of calls to make a successful business are not so bad when every day to live with the knowledge that you have made the lives of individuals and families softer. The elderly population is expected to grow by 100 percent in the coming decades, it is time to secure their own future and buy a franchise in the nursing home care.

Changing the Texture of Plastics On Demand

"Have you seen one of these?" she asked, as she opened the lid.
Lying in a nest of velvet was something that looked like a large, silver egg, about twice the size of the real eggs that Duncan had encountered in the Centennial Hotel.

"What is it?" he asked. "A piece of sculpture?"

"Pick it up---but be careful not to drop it."

Despite this warning, that was very nearly what he did. The egg was not particularly heavy, but it seemed alive--even squirming in his hand, though it showed no sign of any visible movement. However, when he looked at it more carefully, he could see faint opalescent bands flowing over the surface and momentarily blurring the mirror finish. They looked very much like waves of heat, yet there was no sensation of warmth.

"Cup it in both hands," Calindy instructed him, "and close your eyes."

Duncan obeyed, despite an almost irresistible impulse to see what was really happening to the extraordinary object he held. He felt completely disoriented, because it seemed that the sense of touch--the most reliable of all man's messengers from the external universe-was betraying him. For the very texture of the egg was constantly changing. It no longer felt like metal; unbelievably, it was furry. He might have been fondling some small wooled animal--a kitten, perhaps....

But only for seconds. The egg shivered, became hard and rough--it was made of sandpaper, coarse enough to grate the skin..... the sandpaper became satin, so smooth and silky that he wanted to caress it. There was barely time to obey the impulse when..... the egg was liquefying and becoming gelatinous. It seemed about to ooze through his fingers, and Duncan had to force himself not to drop it in disgust. O.nly the knowledge that this could not really be happening gave him strength to control the reflex...

. . it was made of wood; there was no doubt of that, for he could even feel the grain...

. . before it dissolved into myriads of separate bristles, each so sharp and distinct that he could feel them prickling his skin....

And there were sensations that he could not even name, some delightful, most neutral, but some so unpleasant that he could scarcely control his revulsion.
At last, when within his cupped palms Duncan felt the unique, the incomparable touch of human skin, curiosity and amazement got the better of him. He opened his hands; the silver egg was completely unchanged, though now it felt as if it were carved from soap.

"What in heaven's name is it?" he cried.

"It's a tactoid. You haven't heard of them?"

'No."

"Fascinating, isn't it? It does to the sense of touch what a kaleidoscope does to vision. No, don't ask me how it works--something to do with controlled electrical stimulation."

"What's it used for?"

"Must everything have a purpose? It's just a toy--a novelty. Hut I had a very good reason for showing it to you."

"Oh, I know. 'The latest from Earth.'"

The Skinny on Fats | New Health and Fitness

New Health And Fitness.Org - Health Information You Can Use

An excess of any type of fat can be detrimental to your health. Of the different types of fat; saturated and unsaturated, one is said to be much better for your health when eaten in moderation.

The contrast between the two fats is in their chemical structure. Saturated fats don?t have double bonds between carbon atoms. These fats are saturated with hydrogen and stand solid at room temperature. Unsaturated fats, known as the ?healthy fats?, contain double bonds and are liquid at room temperature.

Let?s simplify this a bit. When cooking at high temperatures, you are better off cooking with saturated fats. This does not mean I am telling you to consume more saturated fats. Going back to the double bonds, a saturated fat cannot be altered into a different chemical makeup. An unsaturated fat, cooked at high temperatures can break down the chemical bonds to become a saturated fat. So when you are trying to cook a healthier meal using olive oil, but you use a heat that is too high, you are changing that olive oil into a saturated fat, probably one that is worse for you than if you had just used the butter. To stay on the healthier side and consume more unsaturated fat, cook at a low to medium low heat to ensure that those double bonds stay intact. Saturated and unsaturated fats have contrasting effects on cholesterol levels in the body. So, reduced fat and low fat foods are not necessarily healthier for you. Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and high-density lipoproteins (HDL) are the two types of cholesterol. High levels of LDL?s are bad for your health as a whole and a common cause of heart disease. HDL?s travel through the blood stream removing harmful cholesterol. This type of cholesterol is known to reduce the risk of heart disease rather than promote. Many try to completely remove fats from their diet unaware that they are not all bad for your health. Without proper knowledge of the types of fats one can not effectively manage their diet and improve their health.

Detected mostly in processed foods and animal products, saturated fats raise your LDL cholesterol and contribute to heart disease. Foods that are high in saturated fat are commonly high in dietary cholesterol, also contributing to the risk of heart disease.

Unsaturated fats are in plant products such as nuts, olives, fish, and vegetable oils. Unsaturated fats are separated into monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. The contrast between the two is that monounsaturated fats contain only one double bond while polyunsaturated fats consist of two or more. The two have been found to benefit your health when consumed in moderation. These healthy fats are not only known to lower LDL or bad cholesterol but to raise the good cholesterol, HDL as well.

Taking in the proper amounts of fat in order to decrease your LDL and increase your HDL is very important. Realizing the difference between ?good? and ?bad? fats will enable you to lower your risk for heart disease as well as other common diseases.

Fat?s are crucial to your body functions. Even small amounts of the saturated fats serve the body. Your daily intake should consist of 20% fat. Just be sure that most of this fat is coming from the unsaturated side. This is very important, even with weight loss. No, you cannot lose weight without fat. Look it up.

Economic recovery hopes lift shares

LONDON (Reuters) - European shares gained on Tuesday on hopes German and U.S. data will support rising hopes of an economic recovery ahead of a monetary policy statement by the Federal Reserve.

Germany's ZEW economic sentiment index, due at 1000 GMT, should show Europe's biggest economy steadily recovering from last year's dip, while U.S. February retail sales, due at 1230 GMT, are expected to reveal a second straight month of gains.

Strong data from the two economic powerhouses should combine to support stocks and growth-linked currencies like the Australian and New Zealand dollars, said Steve Barrow, head of G10 currency research at Standard Bank.

"There is an upside risk to U.S. retail sales data, given the underperformance last month."

The hopes sent Asian shares equities to one week highs <.miapj0000pus> earlier and in the day and saw the FTSE Eurofirst <.fteu3> index of top European shares open up 0.5 percent.

With expectations of further U.S. monetary having eased after recent strong economic data, the dollar <.dxy> held close to 7-week high against basket of currencies. The yen bounced back from a 11-month low against the U.S. currency after the Bank of Japan stopped short of taking aggressive easing steps.

The euro little changed at $1.3145 but above one-month low of $1.3079 hit on Monday as worries over Portuguese and Spanish sovereign debt keep investors on edge.

German government bond futures were 24 ticks lower at 138.63, after hitting a contract high of 139.06 the previous session ahead of the ZEW.

Poshpoint: PETS CAN GIVE YOU A LONGER LIFE

I did the math we can't afford this dog:-)

If you have a pet who needs exercising, there?s a good chance you?ll be fitter than someone who hasn?t the same reason for getting out. You also have a companion who doesn?t criticise you.

Another claim is that pets are good stress-busters and the relationship you have with them can increase quantities of the bonding-hormone oxytocin in the bloodstream, while also decreasing stress hormones such as cortisol.

China's top 2 video websites to merge

(AP) ? China's top two video websites announced plans Monday to merge in hopes of creating the dominant competitor in a fast-growing industry that is drawing viewers from bland state television.

Youku Inc. and Tudou Holdings Ltd. said the new company, Youku Tudou Inc., will be created in a stock-for-stock transaction. They said it requires shareholder approval but is expected to be completed by the third quarter of this year.

China's dozens of privately owned video websites have nearly 400 million viewers and industry analysts say the field might represent the future of Chinese video watching and advertising.

Chinese video websites initially imitated Western video-sharing sites that rely on user-supplied content. But they have evolved to act like TV stations, showing imported programs or their own productions to appeal to affluent urban viewers coveted by advertisers.

Youku and Tudou are former rivals and were involved in a legal battle earlier this year over accusations they were misusing each other's content. Both have reported losses recently due to high costs for Internet bandwidth and programming.

Youku had 21.8 percent of China's online video market in the final quarter of 2011, with Tudou in second place at 13.7 percent, according to Analysys International, a research firm in Beijing. Sohu TV, a service of Chinese portal Sohu.com Inc., was in third place with 13.3 percent. Other competitors had single-digit market shares.

In a statement, Youku founder and CEO Victor Koo said the merged entity should have the market's biggest user base and content library.

"Youku Tudou Inc. would establish a clear and dominant leadership position in China's online video sector," Koo said.

Total revenue for Chinese video websites rose 135 percent over a year earlier in the final quarter of 2011 to 1.7 billion yuan ($275 million), according to Analysys International.

Video websites show popular Western series and allow users to download movies and other programming to watch on smart phones or tablet computers.

Beijing has allowed such private companies to flourish with less of the censorship imposed on China's entirely state-owned newspapers, TV and radio, possibly to avoid stifling what is seen as a promising high-tech industry.

Regulators might be driving still more viewers online and away from state TV with rules imposed this year to limit the number of reality, talent and dating shows local broadcasters can show on satellite channels.

The number of Chinese who watch online video jumped from 284 million in 2010 to 394 million in 2011, according to CMM Intelligence, a media consulting firm in Beijing. It said the total might pass 445 million by the end of 2012.

The surging popularity of online video threatens to erode viewership for state TV, which Beijing sees as a tool to mold public opinion. That raises the threat communist leaders might tighten controls to protect their media presence.

Youku reported a 49.6 million yuan ($8 million) loss for the three months ending Dec. 31 but said full-year profit was 200.3 million yuan ($32.3 million), up 450 percent from 2010.

Tudou reported a quarterly loss of 148.9 million yuan ($24 million) and a full-year loss of 511.2 million ($82.4 million).

Chinese official: We're not issuing 4G licenses for another two to three years

China isn't in a huge hurry get its own 4G network up and running, instead wanting to ensure the infrastructure is primed and enough compatible handsets are available before it launches. According to the head of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, Miao Wei, the country needs plenty more base stations -- beyond the existing 220,000 TD-SCDMA bases and closer to 400,000 -- before the government starts offering 4G licenses. China Mobile, the country's largest mobile network, already plans to have over 20,000 TD-LTE base stations in operation by the end of this year, stepping up to 200,000 by the end of next year. This particular type of LTE hasn't quite set the world on fire just yet -- only two operators have launched TD-LTE services and a genuine handset for the network remains absent. Upgrading existing 3G stations is likely to take around three years, according to the official. At least it gives ZTE more time to get the MT73 readied for ICS -- or perhaps Android 5.0.

Updated yesterday at 8:20 PM

VANCOUVER -- An apparent hazing incident involving members of the Heritage High School baseball team was under investigation by the Clark Co. Sheriff's Office.

Deputies were called to York Elementary School, on NE 152nd Avenue, around 8:30 p.m. Friday regarding a disturbance.

They talked with all the people involved in the incident -- some of whom were members of the Heritage HS baseball team -- and handed the case over to the school's resource officer for further investigation, according to CCSO Sgt. Duncan Hoss.

No one was injured, and no one was arrested.

The Evergreen School District was calling the disturbance an "apparent hazing incident", according to district spokesperson Carol Fenstermacher.

The baseball team's scheduled Saturday game at Prairie High School was canceled due to rain, but school leaders took an opportunity to talk with the team about the incident.?

"The Clark County Sheriff's Office is dedicated to working with our community to enhance the safety and livability in Clark County," Hoss said in a statement released Saturday afternoon. "These sorts of incidents are taken very seriously and will be fully investigated."

Researchers report progress in cancer immunotherapy

In a bid to make cancer immunotherapy more effective, researchers report they have succeeded in halting the progress of aggressive melanoma in its tracks ? at least briefly ? in seven patients treated with an army of cloned cancer-fighting immune cells. In one of those patients, the treatment resulted in complete remission of his metastatic melanoma and evidence that his immune system stands ready to fight any return of the cancer after three years.

The study, published Monday in the Proceedings of the National Academies of Science, contributes to hopes that a tumor-fighting strategy called immunotherapy can slow, halt or even reverse the growth of a range of cancers ? and do so with fewer dangerous side effects.

Immunotherapy is one of medicine's most promising ? and most problematic ? approaches to cancer treatment. It aims to charge up the patient's immune system to attack cancer cells and halt their out-of-control growth.

The approach outlined in the new study by researchers from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle identifies several ways to make it better, said Dr. Cassian Yee, the study's senior author. The key is to identify specific cancer-fighting cells already circulating in the blood of patients and make thousands of copies of them in the lab.

This type of "adoptive immunotherapy" could be effective against a wide range of cancers, Yee said. His research group is making plans to try the technique on patients with advanced ovarian cancer and sarcomas ? rare tumors that arise from connective tissue in bones and muscle.

Several independent researchers said the study results were promising. But they also noted that the trial involved only 11 patients and said the therapy was less effective than in other published trials.

"Someday, cell-based therapy will be mainstream in cancer therapy," said Dr. Jeff Miller of the University of Minnesota's cell therapy core laboratory. "Each article that shows clinical activity is giving us a piece of the puzzle" that will make it safer and more effective, he said.

Immunotherapy usually starts with clinicians harvesting immune system cells called T cells that have attached themselves to a tumor in an effort to attack. They then coax the cells to multiply, either in the lab or in the body, and let them loose in the bloodstream so they can attack cancer wherever they find it.

Yee's team tried to do this more precisely. The researchers hoped that by choosing T cells more selectively and cloning only those judged most likely to vanquish their foe, the treatment would be more effective. Sorting through the body's vast and diverse population of T cells to select just the right ones is a painstaking process. But Yee bet that the extra effort would pay off with better results and fewer side effects.

Researchers drew blood from patients and scoured it to find the rare type of immune cell ? a melanoma-specific cytotoxic T lymphocyte cell ? that specifically homes in on proteins expressed by the cancer. Then they put their harvest ? as few as a few hundred cells ? into a test tube and cloned them, creating millions. The last step was to infuse the resulting army of cancer-fighting clones back into the patient.

In six of the 11 patients in the trial, the melanoma stopped progressing for 12 to 19 weeks. Another patient was declared in remission because his cancer ceased to spread and, after several months, disappeared altogether. Three years later, researchers continue to detect the presence of the cloned cells they infused into the patient, 61-year-old high school history teacher Gardiner Vinnedge of North Bend, Wash.

For six years, Vinnedge endured painful rounds of chemotherapy, only to have his melanoma return. The immunotherapy allowed him to return to work three weeks after treatments began. The only side effect, he said, was a raging rash that lasted for three days.

"My back, my legs were just covered with a hot red rash," Vinnedge said. "It meant the treatment was working ? the war was on between my T cells and the melanin in my skin." Now he says he is optimistic he may live to see retirement age, though he's not sure he'll ever stop teaching.

For immunotherapy to work, the manufactured T cells must survive for the months it takes to reach a tumor and dismantle it, as well as to round up migrating cancer cells and kill them. Currently, the T cells have limited staying power and often die off before their work is done. Doctors give them a boost by administering a growth factor called interleukin-2. But at high doses, it can cause dangerously low blood pressure, breathing problems, kidney failure and heart arrhythmias.

Yee's group showed that by choosing T cells more selectively, patients can get by with much lower doses of interleukin-2, making the treatment less toxic.

The researchers also discovered another way to reduce their dependence on interleukin-2 ? by selecting the most youthful T cells, which survived the longest when infused into patients.

Dr. Patrick Hwu of the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston said the study "adds to the wealth of what we know" about using the body's immune system to fight cancer. But immunotherapy pioneer Dr. Steven A. Rosenberg was highly critical of the methods and results.

"Cloned cells don't work," said Rosenberg, who heads the National Cancer Institute's tumor immunology section. In larger immunotherapy trials that used cultured cancer-fighting immune cells taken from patients' tumors, Rosenberg and his colleagues achieved "durable and complete regression" in as many as 40% as patients with advanced metastatic melanoma. "These results," he said, "are inferior."
