Personalized bean bags
Certainly one of the action that children will certainly cherish is personalizing their very own

their chair by putting their favorite cartoon character on the surface or perhaps they could
engrave their initials instead. Designing lounge bag will definitely help kids develop their skills
in art using their own imagination. And with the help of the parents, this will certainly be an
entertaining activity that kids will surely love.
Outside bean bags

One unusual furniture that has gained popularity and may have replaced some of the
traditional home furnishings is the bean bag chair. Lately, people have also used these chairs
outside their homes replacing some of the traditional outdoor furniture such as bench and
swimming pool beds among others. We can attribute these changes for three motives:
durability, ease and total price. they are several of the features possessed by these chairs
that have led everyday people to order them being an alternative for their old fashioned your
home home furniture.
Longevity
Comfort
Another quality that these chairs possess is that they offer convenience and comfort. On the
convenience part, the size of these things can be considered big but they are easy to carry
around unlike traditional home furniture which requires two or more person to carry them.
Outdoor benches for illustration are incredibly challenging to move because they are made
from serious materials that include wooden and metallic. As a result they do not offer
flexibility which the furniture usually have. this have provided consumers the convenience
they usually seek in home furnishings.
Amount
These seats are also affordable and this quality is usually preferred by consumers rather

If you think Apple is getting a little predictable with its yearly device refreshes, you probably haven't been charting the progress of its iPod nano. While most products in the Apple line receive an update every 12 months or so, few have experienced the kind of annual reinvention of the nano. It's a rare example of the company drastically re-thinking a product with such regularity -- or of simply not really knowing what to make of it.
Depending on how you look at it, this new seventh-generation iPod nano is either the latest, most optimal design of the long-running series, or it's Apple's latest shot in the dark. Even the cynics will have to agree this is a pretty good shot, thinner than ever and packing more functionality than in the past -- including Bluetooth 4.0. It sure doesn't make much of a wristwatch, but is the latest littlest iPod worth the $149 price of admission to its 16GB capacity? Read on to find out.

Darren O?Day isn?t a conventional pitcher. He?s given plenty of quality right-handed hitters a tough time during his big-league career. Still, it was kind of telling that Alex Rodriguez couldn?t ?catch up to his 85-mph fastball in Thursday?s loss to the Orioles.
A-Rod did get a single and a walk in five plate appearances Thursday. However, Yankees manager Joe Girardi again made the call to pull him with the game on the line. Unlike Wednesday, it didn?t pay off tonight, as Eric Chavez lined out in his place to end the 13-inning marathon. Still, pretty much everyone figures A-Rod would have struck out anyway.
Starting Rodriguez against left-hander Joe Saunders on Thursday was the right move. Now that the Orioles are going back to a righty in Jason Hammel for Game 5, it?s time for Rodriguez to take a seat. His bat is too slow to make him a threat right now, and if he?s capable of guessing fastball and cheating on it, he certainly hasn?t showed it so far.
Chavez should play third base in his place. Chavez hit .298/.365/.543 with 16 homers in 245 at-bats against righties during the regular season. A-Rod hit .256/.326/.391 with 10 homers in 317 at-bats.
Really, as bad as A-Rod has looked, this doesn?t even make for a tough call. Rodriguez is hardly the only Yankee struggling ? Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson aren?t getting it done either ? but Chavez has been the superior option against righties for months now and with the season on the line, the Yankees can?t afford to be going with their lesser players. It?d do or die, and A-Rod appears long dead.

BEIJING (Reuters) - Blind legal activist Chen Guangcheng said on Saturday that Chinese police had sent the case of his nephew, charged with intentional infliction of injury, to the state prosecutor, paving the way for what he expects will be an unfair trial.
The case of Chen Guangcheng's nephew, Chen Kegui, has renewed international focus on China's human rights and legal system.
Chen has been held incommunicado by police for over five months and has been denied access to his choice of lawyers. His case is widely seen as illegitimate by Chen's family and human rights advocates.
Chen Guangcheng's escape from house arrest in northeastern China in April and subsequent refuge in the U.S. embassy caused huge embarrassment for China, and led to a serious diplomatic rift between the two superpowers.
Chen Kegui was initially charged with "intentional homicide" for using knives to fend off local officials who burst into his home on April 27, the day after they discovered his uncle had escaped.
Chen Guangcheng told Reuters he believed the police downgraded the charge because they had no evidence to build a case of "intentional homicide" against his nephew.
"Judging from the current situation, my confidence in Chen Kegui getting a fair hearing has dropped a lot," Chen Guangcheng said by telephone in New York, where he is now studying law.
Chen Guangcheng said the central government has failed to live up to its promise in May to investigate officials in Shandong whom he accused of engineering the "years of illegal persecution" against him and his family.
"It's been five months, I haven't heard any news about the investigation against Shandong," he said. "Instead I hear that Chen Kegui's case has been sent to the prosecutor, this piece of news in itself is problematic. So how can I not feel that my confidence has been lowered?"
Police in Yinan in Shandong, where Chen Kegui is held in a detention center, were not immediately available for comment.
The prosecutor "almost always accepts the recommendation" made by the police, said Jerome Cohen, an expert in Chinese law from New York University.
"This makes Chen (Kegui)'s prosecution and conviction highly likely," Cohen said in an emailed statement.
Chen Kegui's family-appointed lawyer, Ding Xikui, said he will travel to Yinan next week to see his client, adding that he could not say for certain the maximum sentence that Chen Kegui faces as he has not reviewed the case or seen his client.
The proceedings against Chen Kegui will be a good test case of whether Chinese leaders are intent on enforcing the rule of law and enacting reforms, said Chen Guangcheng.
"I think that if the authorities, at this point, once again don't make the correct choice and once again refuse to safeguard social justice and continue maintaining their own privileges, they are inadvertently announcing to the world: 'You ordinary folk, we just don't want to enforce the rule of law, we want to make hostages out of you ordinary people," Chen said.
After four years in jail on what he and his supporters say were trumped-up charges designed to end his activism, Chen was released in 2010 and put under house arrest in Shandong.
Chen had accused Shandong officials in 2005 of forcing women to have late-term abortions and sterilizations to comply with China's strict family-planning policies. He was charged with whipping up a crowd that disrupted traffic and damaged property.

Reed is in the intermediate class at East West Martial Arts.? To progress towards his next belt he decided to help raise funds for Kent Youth Lacrosse Scholarship Program.? One of Reed?s favorite sports besides martial arts is playing Lacrosse.? His idea was to make use of old planters at his Mom?s work and sell these to raise money towards the scholarship program.
When asked about his project he explained.
?At my mom?s work, I?asked her what containers she did not need in the warehouse.? I helped her bring them home.? Then I cleaned them and sorted them.? I helped make a poster explaining what the money will go to and I sold them at the Chestertown Farmers Market.? Money from this project will help kids from Kent County afford to play Lacrosse in the spring.? It was really nice to raise over $100 and donate it to Kent Youth Lacrosse.? I love lacrosse and now other kids will be able to play too.?? We handed the check to Mr. Clint Evans, President of Kent Youth Lacrosse.?
Great job Reed!

Could Vice President Joe Biden?s incessant smiling (or smirking, depending on your point of view) during the debate have been deliberate?
By asking this, we don?t just mean that Mr. Biden had a strategy to be aggressive and try to disqualify his much younger opponent by refusing to appear to take him seriously. That's obvious enough.
No, we?re wondering if something even more calculated could have been going on.

Here?s our thinking: There was much to criticize about President Obama?s performance in last week?s debate ? but the biggest failing, in the eyes of many of his supporters, was his lack of animation and firepower. He just seemed disengaged, so flat and feeble that viewers on both sides of the aisle agreed he?d essentially ceded the stage.
Biden?s challenge Thursday night was not only to reenergize dispirited liberals ? but, maybe even more important, to set the stage for Mr. Obama?s next debate, which comes in just four days.
This time, Obama clearly will need to raise his energy level and give a more impassioned performance than the one he turned in last week. But he can?t appear too heated, too dramatically different ? or the effort could seem artificial and even desperate.
This is the trap that Al Gore fell into back in 2000. Widely criticized for his demeanor in his first presidential debate ? particularly those now-infamous sighs ? he made an obvious effort to change his approach in the next round. The result? He was panned again, this time for what seemed like a too-transparent attempt to be more likable.
So the challenge for Obama will be to carefully calibrate his next performance, correcting his previous mistakes without making it seem like he?s overcompensating.
And that?s where Biden?s incessant, aggressive smiling comes in. By taking his own animation level right through the roof, Biden may have given Obama a little more room to emote on Tuesday, without seeming like he?s overdoing it.
Because everyone just saw what overdoing it looks like ? thanks to Biden.
As MSNBC?s First Read put it Friday morning: ?Biden ? by turning his volume to 11 last night ? takes some ? pressure off the president. If you've followed Obama over the past six years, you know it's not his style to be overly aggressive. Well, Biden last night both gave Obama a road map for how to attack Romney-Ryan (on abortion, tax fairness, foreign policy), and he gave him room to do it in the way he feels most comfortable.?
The really interesting question is whether Biden possibly did this on purpose. True, putting in an over-the-top performance may not ultimately help him in his own presidential ambitions. But if Obama loses the election, Biden?s presidential hopes go up in smoke, anyway.
In other words, sometimes you have to take one for the team. And while it may ultimately be too much of a stretch, it doesn't seem entirely impossible, either, that on Thursday night, Biden may have done just that.

NEW YORK (AP) ? It was an ad campaign conceived as eye candy to bring attention to other advertisements in New York's transit system. But the "Meet Miss Subways" beauty contest posters of pretty young New York women and their aspirations quickly evolved into a popular and even groundbreaking fixture that ran for 35 years, from 1941 to 1976.
When photographer Fiona Gardner first learned about it she "immediately wanted to know what happened to all the women."
She set out to find out.
The result is "Meet Miss Subways: New York's Beauty Queens 1941-76," an exhibition at the New York Transit Museum running Oct. 23-March 25, and a companion book of the same name.
The contest reflected an evolving America. When it was launched, the war already was changing the role of women. From 1952 to 1962, the contest featured schoolteachers, stewardesses and suburban housewives; the next 10 years saw secretaries and airplane pilots.
The first African-American was crowned Miss Subways in 1948 ? long before Vanessa Williams was named Miss America in 1984 ? and the first Asian-American was honored in 1949.
"It was the first integrated and ethnically diverse beauty contest in America," representing working-class women, said Gardner, who was born the year the contest ended. "I realized I had stumbled on a piece of forgotten New York history."
Her interest was piqued in 2004 after seeing some of the original posters on the walls of Ellen's Stardust Diner, whose owner Ellen Hart Strum was crowned Miss Subways in 1959. The winners' future dreams were listed along with their headshots; many wanted to be models or singers, while others yearned to travel ? "Europe four times, no less," read the Miss Subways poster of Maureen Walsh Roaldsen in 1968. The first Miss Subways, Mona Freeman, even went on to become a movie star after being discovered by Howard Hughes.
But for most, the subway placard was their only moment in the spotlight, and finding the former winners was a challenge for Gardner. The contest archives were lost. Many of the women had married and changed their names, some had moved, still others had died.
She searched the Internet, voter registration and municipal archives and even hired a private eye. With journalist Amy Zimmer, she tracked down 146 Miss Subways posters and interviewed 41 winners in person. Together they collaborated on the book, with Gardner taking the women's portraits wearing their Miss Subways sashes at home or at work.
"Many of these women are very interesting and have accomplished many things. You realize there's a much more complex story behind the headshots. Many of them went back and had second and third careers," said Gardner.
Marcia Kilpatrick Hocker's dream to study with the Negro Ensemble Company repertory theater came true. She auditioned after becoming Miss Subways in 1975, calling the contest "very confidence-boosting."
"I'm basically very shy. ... I didn't know I would be representing Miss Subways at various functions, speaking at kickoff events, addressing school groups," the 65-year-old Hocker said in a telephone interview from Gresham, Ore., where she now lives.
She wanted to be Miss Subways because she "wanted to be discovered. I wanted to do commercials and be an actress," Hocker said.
She married an American diplomat in 1981 and lived for a time in Colombia and New Zealand. She put her talents to use, singing at embassy functions and coaching American children in drama. For the past 11 years, she's been a DJ at Jazz Radio KMHD in Portland.
For the first 22 years, winners were selected by the John Robert Powers modeling agency and the New York Subways Advertising Company. Afterward, it became a more democratic contest, with straphangers voting via postcard for their favorite finalist.
Changing times including the women's movement, the city's fiscal crisis and rampant graffiti in the transit system brought an end to the contest.
Only 17 when she won, Strum's poster said she wanted to pursue an acting career and devote all her spare time to acting, singing and speech lessons.
"For a while I was known as the national anthem singer," the 71-year-old said. In the 1980s Strum sang The Star-Spangled Banner for the Knicks and Rangers games as one of Madison Square Garden's rotating singers. She also sang at official city functions.
She married and had two sons. Her retro 1950s-themed restaurant opened in 1987, featuring singing waiters and 70 Miss Subways posters. She also stages Miss Subways reunions at the diner.
Roaldsen, 67, a 1968 winner, is coming to the next one Nov. 13 for the book's launch party.
She was 23 and working as a secretary at Downstate Medical Center when she won. On weekends, she greeted VIPs and celebrities at the Diamond Club at Shea Stadium.
As Miss Subways she represented New York. Among the perks was attending Richard Nixon's inauguration and going to the premier of "Finian's Rainbow" at the Ziegfeld Theatre, where she briefly met Fred Astaire.
She married and continued to travel, her passion. In her 40s she launched a new career as an attorney for the New York State Appellate Court.
It wasn't a real beauty contest, said Hocker. "It was about a well-groomed young woman who in addition to wanting to be a wife and mom, had aspirations to do something to contribute to the community at large."

The most common sexually transmitted disease is often silent and invisible: human papillomavirus (also called HPV). But in some people HPV leads to genital warts and cancers ? notably, cervical cancer.
The vaccines Gardasil and Cervarix were designed as a prevention for young women who have not yet been exposed to HPV. Men up to age 26 are also eligible for Gardasil to protect against HPV. But there are a lot of people out there who still have HPV, and nothing protects against all 130 strains of the virus. At least half of all sexually active males and females have had HPV, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
A Pennsylvania start-up company called Inovio Pharmaceuticals has developed an experimental vaccine for people who already have HPV and precancerous lesions that are associated with it. A new study demonstrating the vaccine's safety and potential effectiveness was published this week in the journal Science Translational Medicine.
The experimental vaccine does not use the live HPV virus; it is formulated in synthetic DNA and pure water. It uses the immune system of the treated women to fight off cancer, said Joseph Kim, president and CEO of Inovio Pharmaceuticals and study co-author.
Worldwide, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer after breast cancer, with about 493,000 new cases and 274,000 deaths annually, the study said. HPV causes about 5% of cancers globally.
Some women, because of their particular genetic makeup, can clear precancerous lesions on their own and would not need this vaccine. This happens in anywhere from 10% to 25% of women infected with HPV, Kim said.
No one knows why some women have this capability and others do not, but for those who lack it the Inovio vaccine is "giving our immune system a little boost," Kim said.
Eighteen women with high-grade precancerous cervical lesions participated in the phase 1 study.
Study authors say the vaccine is formulated to work against all cancers caused by HPV types 16 and 18, including cervical, anogenital (anal and genital), and head and neck cancers. The researchers did not observe any side effects.
In the next phase of this research 150 women worldwide are participating, but they are not included in these published results, Kim said.
The phase 1 results are very early in the experimentation of this vaccine. The study was not done as a randomized controlled trial, the gold standard for determining whether a drug works better than chance. Also, 18 people is a small number for examining the effects of a medication.
Given those drawbacks, it?s not appropriate to draw too many conclusions from this study, says Dr. Diane Harper, a prominent HPV researcher at the University of Missouri ? Kansas City?s School of Medicine. Harper contributed to the studies on both HPV vaccines that are currently available, Cervarix and Gardasil, and is not involved with this research.
?Several therapeutic vaccines have shown great promise in phase 1 and then not panned out in phase 2,? she noted in an e-mail.
The vaccine consists of three injections in the arm over three months, Kim said. The vaccine trains T-cells in the body to go after cervical cells with potentially cancerous genes embedded in them.
Inovio is using this technology to develop vaccines for prostate cancer and HIV also, Kim said.
?We certainly have a technology that can change the medical field by being able to program and generate strong immune responses that are specific and effective,? he said.
Kim said the next phase results should be out at the end of 2013; then comes a larger phase 3 trial with about 500 patients, to be concluded around 2016 or 2017.
HPV is spread through genital contact, including oral sex, and partners can bounce the virus back and forth between them, making it harder to clear naturally. Kissing is not known to deliver this STD.

The sixth and final season of "Jersey Shore" just premiered on MTV last week, but for the stars of the show, it's already over. On Thursday morning, Jennifer "JWoww" Farley, Sammi Giancola and Deena Nicole Cortese visited TODAY and shared what the future holds for them now.
For JWoww, the "Shore" won't be too far behind her as she continues her spinoff, "Snooki & JWoww," which will no doubt see her planning her upcoming nuptials.
But Sammi and Deena aren't spinoff bound -- at least not yet. Instead, they're focusing on other ways to make it post-"Shore."
"I have my workout line, two perfumes, a men's cologne and a clutch line coming out," Sammi explained.
In addition to clothing line and a perfume of her own, Deena is breaking out into another form of entertainment.
"I've been doing voice overs for ? cartoons," she said. "I feel like I'm a character myself, so why not be a character?"
But what about the other lady of "Jersey Shore"? For Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, who didn't join her pals Thursday, the future (as well as the present) not only holds her show with pal JWoww but more importantly, her son, little Lorenzo.
The woman all agreed, she's an amazing mom.
"She's still herself, but she changed for the better," Sammi said. "(Snooki's) so much more mature."

This morning, Jets owner Woody Johnson made a clear commitment to starting quarterback Mark Sanchez.? Johnson also said quarterback Tim Tebow will be with the team for three years, the balance of his rookie deal.
This afternoon, coach Rex Ryan indirectly but unmistakably disputed Johnson?s account, as to both players.
As to Sanchez, Ryan said the fourth-year starter will remain the starter.? But Ryan wasn?t nearly as clear about the future as Johnson was regarding Sanchez.
?A lot of things can happen,? Ryan said, via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.? ?And I?m not going to deal with what ifs because . . . I?m telling you right now [that] he?s our starting quarterback this week, barring injury.? And things happen.? I feel really confident in Mark. . . .? I?ve never wavered on him.?
Ryan revisited the issue later in the media session.? ?He?s our starter.? What do you want me to say?? Ryan said.? ?He?s our starter.? He?s our starter this week. He?s our starter.?
The key words seem to be ?this week,? and the reason for Ryan?s reluctance to give an open-ended commitment to Sanchez is obvious.? Even if the team doesn?t plan to bench a guy, sometimes the threat of benching a guy helps get the most out of him.
It?s a tactic that Ryan has used twice in the past two years.? And Ryan admitted to it in his 2011 book, Play Like You Mean It.
?I started giving our backup quarterback, Mark Brunell, more snaps in practice just to let Sanchez know I wasn?t kidding around,? Ryan wrote regarding a rough spot Sanchez hit in 2010.? ?Now, it got Sanchez?s ass going sideways a little bit.? He wasn?t happy at all.? When he was in my office, he was pouting a little about it, but I could give less than two shits about that.?
As to Tebow, Ryan also was less absolute than Johnson regarding the question of whether Tebow will be on the team for three years.
?When we traded for Tim, we understood his contract situation,? Ryan said.? ?We brought him in because we think Tim?s a good football player.? With that being said ? and this goes for any player ? we think the guys will be with us throughout the length of the contract, but if, you know . . . there?s no guarantee there that if there?s , you know, whatever, an opportunity to help your football team. . . .? If we see fit . . . whatever?s in the best interest of our team. . . .? I guess no player is totally guaranteed that they?ll be there.? But clearly he?s a guy that we thought a lot of and that?s why we traded for him.? And still think a lot of.?
Ryan surely can?t think a lot of Johnson making commitments that don?t mesh with the strategic objectives of the football operation, and that?s one of the reasons why some teams insist on having only ?one voice? speak for the franchise.? Since the ?once voice? approach likely isn?t practical in this day and age, the folks who do the talking for a team need to be equipped at all times with comprehensive talking points ? and they need to know how to stick to them.

BRUSSELS (AP) ? NATO defense leaders gathering here Tuesday are committed to the war in Afghanistan, according to U.S. and alliance officials, but there are growing signs that the Afghan political and military hostilities are starting to wear on the coalition.
Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and other U.S. officials heading into the meetings say they expect to reassure allies that military commanders are doing all they can to stem the tide of insider attacks, in which Afghan troops or insurgents dressed in their uniforms turn their guns on the coalition forces that are training them.
Compounding those military threats, however, is a recent spike in political tensions between Afghanistan's government leaders and the U.S.
Afghan President Hamid Karzai complained that the war effort is wrongheaded, and that coalition forces are not fighting the right enemy.
Just days ahead of the NATO meeting, Panetta was uncharacteristically sharp, criticizing Karzai for complaining rather than thanking the troops who have sacrificed their lives for his country. Karzai's argument that NATO is wrongly going after the Taliban in Afghanistan when it should be fighting insurgents in Pakistan's safe havens could further erode support for the war, particularly among members of Congress.
Panetta's pique reflects the frustration of his military commanders, who have seen more than 2,000 U.S. troops die in the 11-year war. And it can only fuel the increasingly strident grumbling by American lawmakers who are facing hotly contested elections next month, and are hearing from constituents wondering why the U.S. is pouring billions of dollars into a fight that Afghanistan's shaky and corruption-plagued government may no longer support.
Still, Panetta and allied leaders, including NATO Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen, insist that the war strategy is sound. They say the coalition will stick to the withdrawal schedule, which has combat forces leaving and Afghan forces taking over security of the country by the end of 2014.
During meetings Tuesday, Rasmussen said the ministers are expected to endorse a new framework for the Afghan war post 2014, shifting the focus of the coalition effort from combat to training. As a result, NATO is working on a new name for the mission ? which to date has been the International Security Assistance Force. It would change in 2015 to the International Training, Advisory and Assistance Mission.
That mission would also likely include continued counterterrorism efforts by the U.S.
The NATO members were also discussing the widening gap in defense spending between the U.S. and the European allies, who have been cutting military budgets as part of their financial austerity measures. In the middle of the past decade, the U.S. accounted for about 63 percent of total alliance spending, in contrast to 77 percent today.
Panetta told reporters traveling with him that the ministers will discuss the progress that has been made since they met for a summit in Chicago earlier this year.
"I'll also reassure allies of our strong commitment to finishing the job in Afghanistan alongside our allies," he said.
Defense ministers on Wednesday will also hear from Marine Gen. John Allen, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, who will discuss measures the military has taken to reduce the insider attacks.
The attacks, which have killed more than 53 coalition troops this year, have imperiled the strategy by eating away at the trust between the allied forces and the Afghans they were sent there to mentor and train.
"My goal is to make clear to NATO and to our allies that we are taking all steps necessary to confront this issue and that it should not be allowed to deter us from the plan that Gen. Allen put in place," said Panetta.
With support for the war ebbing across America and much of the world, there have been growing calls for a speedier withdrawal.
That prospect raises alarm among commanders who worry that they won't have the forces they need to do the training and counterterrorism operations they believe necessary to continue the transition of security to the Afghan troops while also keeping the Taliban from resurging.
Responding to a question about Panetta's criticism of Karzai's complaints that troops should focus on Pakistan insurgents coming across the border rather than the Taliban in the country, a NATO official would say only that the alliance's operations were limited to Afghanistan.
"Therefore NATO is not in a position to take action on militants on the other side of the border," said the official, who could not be named in line with alliance rules.
"Obviously we've looked at (this issue), but it is not something that NATO can take the lead in," he said. "It is always important to remember that for NATO, the limit of our operations is the borders of Afghanistan."
The U.S. has ramped up its unmanned drone campaign targeting insurgents that wage attacks then return to Pakistan safe havens, including the Haqqani network. But there are ongoing frustrations that Pakistan is not doing enough to tamp down the militants within its borders.

ScienceDaily (Oct. 10, 2012) ? In an effort to identify the thousands of John/Jane Doe cold cases in the United States, a Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory researcher and a team of international collaborators have found a multidisciplinary approach to identifying the remains of missing persons.
Using "bomb pulse" radiocarbon analysis developed at Lawrence Livermore, combined with recently developed anthropological analysis and forensic DNA techniques, the researchers were able to identify the remains of a missing child 41 years after the discovery of the body.
In 1968, a child's cranium was recovered from the banks of a northern Canadian river. Initial analysis conducted by investigators, using technology at the time, concluded that the cranium came from the body of a 7-9-year-old child and no identity could be determined. The case went cold and was reopened later.
The cranium underwent reanalysis at the Centre for Forensic Research, Simon Fraser University in Canada, where skull measurements, skeletal ossification, and dental formation indicated an age-at-death of approximately 4 1/2; years old. At Lawrence Livermore, researchers conducted radiocarbon analysis of enamel from two teeth indicated a more precise birth date. Forensic DNA analysis, conducted at Simon Fraser University, indicated the child was a male, and the obtained mitochondrial profile matched a living maternal relative to the presumed missing child.
The multidisciplinary analyses resulted in a legal identification 41 years after the discovery of the remains, highlighting the enormous potential of combining radiocarbon analysis with anthropological and mitochondrial DNA analyses in producing confident personal identifications in forensic cold cases dating to within the last 60 years.
"There are thousands of John Doe and Jane Doe cold cases in the United States," said Livermore scientist Bruce Buchholz, who conducted the radiocarbon analysis in the case. "I believe we could provide birth dates and death dates for many of these cases."
Age determination of unknown human bodies is important in the setting of a crime investigation or a mass disaster, because the age at death, birth date and year of death, as well as gender, can guide investigators to the correct identity among a large number of possible matches.
Using the Laboratory's Center for Accelerator Mass Spectrometry, Buchholz determined that the radioactive carbon-14 produced by above-ground nuclear testing in the 1950s and 1960s remains in the dental enamel, the hardest substance in the body. The radiocarbon analysis shows that dating teeth with the carbon-14 method estimates the birth date within one to two years.
Above-ground testing of nuclear weapons during the Cold War (1955-1963) caused a surge in global levels of carbon-14 (14C), which has been carefully recorded over time. The radiocarbon technique determines the amount of 14C in tooth enamel. Scientists can relate the extensive atmospheric record for 14C to when the tooth was formed and calculate the age of the tooth and its owner.
In forensic cases where teeth are unavailable, the radiocarbon analysis of bone also can provide useful information whether the time of death occurred prior to 1955 or afterward.
In the missing child case, Buchholz determined radiocarbon values for two teeth, which once analyzed showed that that the average of the crown's enamel formation span occurred between 1959 and 1961.
"In a conservative estimate, the carbon-14 value for the crown's enamel would correspond with a birth year between 1958 and 1962," Buchholz said.
In summary, the 14C dates in combination with the age-at-death estimate using anthropological techniques suggest that the child was born between 1958 and 1962 and died between 1963 and 1968.
The research also has implications for the identity of victims in mass graves or mass fatality contexts, where a combined DNA and radiocarbon analysis approach provides the additional benefit of distinguishing between maternal relations.
Besides Livermore and Simon Fraser University, other institutions participating in the research include the Karolinska Institute in Sweden and the British Columbia Institute of Technology.

SWANTON, Ohio (AP) ? Mitt Romney's administration on Day One would approve a pipeline that would run from Canada to U.S. refineries in Texas, creating thousands of jobs and pushing America on its way to energy independence, Republican vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan said Monday.
Ryan told supporters during his third trip to swing state Ohio in the last two weeks that there are enough energy resources for North America to become energy independent within eight years.
"We need to unlock the energy we have in this country to create jobs," he said.
Ryan blamed President Barack Obama for standing in the way of the Keystone XL pipeline and pushing too many environmental regulations that have cost jobs in the coal industry, a thorny issue for the president in southeast Ohio, where coal has a large footprint. He said similar control by Washington has hampered manufacturing growth throughout the Midwest, including Michigan and his home state of Wisconsin.
Obama earlier this year objected to the Keystone XL pipeline's proposed 1,179-mile route over environmental concerns, suggesting that the pipeline should go around a sensitive aquifer in Nebraska. But Obama encouraged the company to pursue a shorter project from Oklahoma to the Gulf Coast.
Approving the entire pipeline would get people back to work in construction and factories, Ryan said.
The Wisconsin congressman said coming up with new energy sources, improving job training programs and removing bureaucratic barriers will go a long way in helping Ohio, Michigan and other industrial states that have lost jobs over the last four years. He told supporters at a late-afternoon private fundraiser in the Detroit suburb of Pontiac that pro-growth, anti-regulation policies of a Romney administration would also improve the fortunes of the manufacturing industry, which has lost hundreds of thousands of jobs during the past few years.
"We know a very healthy auto economy is healthy for America," he said.
Ryan capped a campaign swing through Michigan with a raucous rally at nearby Oakland University in the school's athletic center. He was preceded by many speakers, including GOP U.S. Senate candidate Pete Hoekstra, who aims to unseat Democrat Debbie Stabenow, and made-in-Michigan musician Kid Rock, who has been strumming for the Romney ticket.
"I'm very proud to say that we have elected our first black president," Rock said to scant applause as he introduced Ryan. "I'm sorry he didn't do a better job. I really wish that he would have, I really do."
Ryan said he's concerned that U.S. allies are seeing "a superpower in retreat" when it comes to foreign as well as domestic policies. He said that under the Obama administration, there has been more borrowing, spending, money-printing and taxing.
"It doesn't create more jobs, it does not create more prosperity," he said. "We've got to get off the path of copying European policies."

According to the InternetWorldStats, Vietnam has more than 30 million Internet users, the fastest growing Internet market of Southeast Asia in term of growth rate, just second place in term of total users behind Indonesia with 50 milion Internet users. So what is the e-commerce trend here?
If you came to Vietnam two years ago in 2010, and ask someone in any office building if he or she has bought anything online, the answer is likely no. But now, you can survey many people in many different groups: students, white colar workers, small business owners, house-hold women and especially office women, most they already bought some products online. ?What happened?
1. The Groupon phenomenon ? Key factor of the Tipping Point
The transformation occurred after the wave of Groupon clones in Vietnam. More than 200 of these kinds of sites and the power of discounted products and services has strongly educate people to buy online just because of cheap prices.
Estimations from some top leaders in the group-buying market puts online shoppers in Vietnam at more than two million users instead of less than 100.000 users two years ago. ?This number is in line with the ratio five to seven percent between online sales/total sales in some big companies which have both online and offline channels.
2. Offline to online: New sales channel
Another reason is the trend to use online channels as a new sales channel that is being gradually explored by many big offline companies. Due to the crowd and saturation of current channels, they think they should provide more choices for their customers so that customers can buy products in whatever way they want.
From the cost which is saved from store renting, sales personnel wages,?utilities?and other costs tied to the opening of a brick-n-mortar store, merchants can share those saving with customers by making price go down.
Many online fashion & digital devices shop are opened by one-person business. They use their home as warehouse and open a website, or use popular consumer-to-consumerwebsites like 5giay.vn, enbac.com, vatgia.com and 123mua.vn as their showrooms.
These above trends are also a good force stimulating people to try to buy online.
3. Online payment system: Just peers, no King
How about payment? For most of high value producs or services, main payment methods is still cash on delivery (COD), the most popular way people feel comfortable to use. In some big retailers like Thegioididong.com, the largest mobile & personal devices store chain in Vietnam with more than 200 stores, it offers scanner to help users pay by ATM or credit cards when they receive products. A big percentage of online payment is recognized in buying airlines or movie tickets where people have to book their seat before.
Online payment tools now have some form of group?banking such as Onepay backed up by Vietcombank. Large consumer-to-consumer companies such as Baokim of Vatgia.com,the largest C2C platfom, NganLuong from Chodientu.vn and ?Soha from VCCorp and also providing similar services. Mobile phone network providers with online payment tools includes Momo, backed by Vinaphone. A local mobile payment solutions startups, Mobivi, was founded by Trung Dung, one of 17 successful American immigrants profiled inThe American Dream, who sold his company OnDisplay for US$ 1.8 billion.
However, there is no dominant player in the payment market, even though Baokim has a little bit stronger than those competitors. Other services such as NganLuong is backed by Paypal with Ebay still recruiting small and medium enterprise clients to accept it.
4. Logistics ? Connection between business owners and online buyers
Logistics remains a major challenge for e-commerce players. Will logistics bring down the e-commerce industry ?
About shipping matters, as the public post company is not suitable for ecommerce companies to ship their products efficiently, they have to find out the way to deliver to their customers faster and cheaper. Some leading companies have built their own teams to manage this. These teams can cover for two or three top-tier cities like Ho Chi Minh City and Ha Noi. In other cities and provinces, they still use public postal services.
Other who are not well-established prefer to choose third-party services like Tin Thanh, a private shipping company which is popular with e-commerce companies. Some e-commerce firms even start their own shipping companies to serve both outdoor and inhouse needs. Examples are VCCorp, a leading Internet group backed by IDG Ventures Vietnam and Intel Capital or Vatgia.com, a leading consumer-to-consumer site also offer shipping services for their owned sites and for outdoor clients too.
Giaohangnhanh.vn a young startup with a 30-person team, is started by two angels investors who are successful veterans in the distribution and retail space. The startup is eager to provide a new method of professional shipping services by helping to track and ship orders more systematically.
5. Pumping power from giant Internet guys
Most actions are driven from the big players like FPT Online, VNG and VCCorp who are the top three online firms in Vietnam. FPT Online is backed up by FPT, an ICT corp with revenues greater than US$1 billion in 2011. FPT Online started sendo.vn an online shopping solution. VNG, the largest portal with nearly US$ 200 million in revenues last year, promotes 123.vn that targets new mums with their baby apparel products.
VCCorp, an Internet leading group with more than 30 sites, backed by IDG Ventures Vietnam, recently received an un-disclosed amount of money from Intel Capital, also boosted by recruiting more than 100 new employees in their e-commerce department.
Even VanCL from China also jumped into Vietnam ecommerce market with vancl.vn.
Travel sites are also showing more local interests with ?.vn? domain or activities in Vietnam such as Expedia.com.vn from the largest travel company in the world and jobstreet.vn from JobStreet.com.sg, one of the leading job sites in Southeast Asia. Booking.com os also looking for a sales manager for the Vietnam market.
Even though Vietnam e-commerce space is still facing reducing interest from group-buying customers, online payment and delivery issues and customer services quality issues, all these five factors are helping to boost the e-commerce market to a new level and it is just the beginning of the uptrend path.
