Dueling views of NYC cop at cannibal-plot trial

NEW YORK (AP) ? A jury was asked Thursday to decide whether a New York City police officer was a monster with a badge and a dangerous desire to cannibalize women or a troubled family man whose disturbing fantasies ruined his life but never put anyone in jeopardy.

Officer Gilberto Valle's elaborate chats with fellow users of fetish websites about abducting, torturing and eating at least six women, including his wife, "are no more real than an alien invasion," defense attorney Julia Gatto said in closing arguments at Valle's murder conspiracy trial.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Hadassa Waxman told jurors the evidence showed Valle "left the world of fantasy and entered the world of reality." The officer's actions were "no joke," she added. "It was not just sick entertainment."

In a rebuttal argument given before the jury was to get the case, prosecutor Randall Jackson labeled Valle "a sexually sadistic individual."

Deliberations were to begin later Thursday.

The arguments came at the close of a two-week trial in federal court in Manhattan that has made the baby-faced officer a tabloid sensation. Jurors sometimes appeared squeamish when shown sadistic images like a staged video of a chained, naked woman screaming as the flame of a torch was put beneath her crotch. The officer openly wept over his wife's testimony describing how she uncovered his late night computer activity, fled their home with their infant child and contacted the FBI.

Valle's arrest last year interrupted a ghoulish plan to "kidnap, torture, rape and commit other horrific acts on young women," Waxman said Thursday.

The prosecutor argued that the 28-year-old officer took concrete steps to further the plot ? looking up potential targets on a restricted law enforcement database, searching the Internet for how to knock someone out with chloroform and showing up on the block of one woman after agreeing to kidnap her for $5,000.

He also viewed a clip of the slaughter of a goat ? a "gruesome video ... a practical how-to guide to killing, an educational tool for Valle's killing," the prosecutor said.

At trial, the jury heard the testimony of women who knew Valle and were trading innocent-sounding emails and texts with him at the same time he was scheming to make meals out of them. The government also sought to drive home the point that Valle was more of a threat because he was a police officer.

"Women who wanted no part of this were put in grave danger by that man, Gilberto Valle," Waxman said.

The defense claims Valle is being prosecuted for indulging in offensive-but-harmless fantasies fed by visits to websites meant solely for role-play.

Gatto started her closing by reading from a 2012 Valle email saying, "I just have a world in my mind and in that world I am kidnapping women and selling them to people interested in buying them."

The attorney called her client's obsession with cannibalism a "stupid, infantile" habit that destroyed his life but not proof of a conspiracy with three others who he never met in person. The defendant, wearing a dark suit and yellow tie, again cried as his lawyer described how the case had "cost him everything," including his wife and "adorable baby."

Gatto also compared the Valle case to the infamous "War of the Worlds" radio broadcast in 1938 that, according to myth, caused some people to flee their homes. Likewise, she said, the disturbing online interplays caused his wife to panic and set in motion a misguided prosecution.

But the lawyer argued Valle's only crime was fantasizing about doing sick things to women he knew.

"That's Gill's porn," she said. "Gil has a fetish. He's had it for a long time."

Sarah Jessica Parker Talks 'Girls,' AnnaSophia Robb And 'The Carrie Diaries'

Would "Girls" be the phenomenon it is today if "Sex & The City" hadn't come before it? Not according to Sarah Jessica Parker.

In an interview with Net-A-Porter's The Edit, Parker revealed that she believes "SATC" paved the way for Lena Dunham.

?HBO was very encouraging of the beyond-camera role I played, and I feel that had we not done it, I don't know that would have existed for 'Girls,'" she said. "It's a such a different way of thinking and it's not conventional.

?I also think [Dunham] came along understanding her voice and with the support of a producing partner [Judd Apatow] experienced enough to say she is capable of this, she needs to be in charge of the story as it's her voice. I do feel 'Sex & The City's' success made that possible, and it would have been different otherwise.?

Parker told The Hollywood Reporter in September 2012 that "Girls" is "a very different show ... But the similarity is in the intimacy of the conversations among women."

Dunham told Claire Danes in Interview magazine that she found "Sex & The City" to be "aspirational."

"And not just in terms of lifestyle," Dunham said. "I kind of also felt like it was aspirational about friendship."

Aspirational at may have been, but a prequel to the HBO series is currently airing on the CW -- and Parker isn't exactly thrilled about it.

"You know, I think it?s one of those tests of your generosity," Parker told The Edit of "The Carrie Diaries." "She [Anna?Sophia Robb] is a lovely girl and I want her to feel good about it, but it's ... odd.?

"Girls" airs Sundays at 9 p.m. EST on HBO and "The Carrie Diaries" airs on Mondays at 8 p.m. EST on The CW.

(AP) ? Shifting course in the face of political gridlock, President Barack Obama is making rare overtures to rank-and-file Republicans, inviting GOP senators to dinner Wednesday, planning visits to Capitol Hill and working the phones with lawmakers.

Obama's efforts are aimed at jumpstarting budget talks and rallying support for his proposals on immigration and gun control.

The president's new charm offensive underscores the limitations of his earlier attempts to use public pressure, rather than direct engagement, to win Republican cooperation. That strategy proved futile in recent weeks, as the White House and Congress failed to prevent $85 billion in automatic budget cuts that both sides said they wanted to avoid.

As that "sequester" has started taking effect, Obama has begun quietly calling congressional Republicans to discuss the prospects for an elusive longer-term deficit reduction deal as well as his other second-term priorities. Aides say Obama is concentrating his outreach on lawmakers with a history of bipartisan deal-making and those who have indicated some willingness to support increased tax revenue as part of a big deficit-cutting package.

In both his calls and dinner invitations, the president pointedly has skipped over Sen. Mitch McConnell and House Speaker John Boehner, the GOP leaders who insist that Obama will get no further tax hikes from Capitol Hill.

Republicans have had mixed reactions to the outreach from the president, who previously has shown little appetite for personal engagement with lawmakers, often preferring to assign those efforts to his staff and Vice President Joe Biden.

"He's never spent anytime reaching out," said Sen. Tom Coburn, R-Okla., who spoke with the president this week about gun legislation. "The question is, is it starting to change because there is bad poll numbers or is it because he really decided he's going to lead and solve some of the problems of the country?"

Sen. Lindsey Graham, a frequent critic of the White House on national security issues, said he was encouraged by Obama's efforts.

"This is how you solve hard problems," the South Carolina Republican said.

It was during a phone call with Graham this week that the president raised the prospect of a group dinner with Republican lawmakers, an Obama aide said. Graham agreed to put together a guest list.

Along with Graham and Coburn, lawmakers invited to Wednesday's dinner were Sens. John McCain, Kelly Ayotte, Pat Toomey, Bob Corker, Ron Johnson, Saxby Chambliss, John Hoeven, Dan Coats, Richard Burr and Mike Johanns. The two-hour dinner took place on neutral territory ? the Jefferson Hotel, a few blocks from the White House.

McCain, responding to a reporter's question about how the dinner went, jokingly said "terrible," then added that the meal went "just fine."

Obama has often scoffed at the notion that calling or meeting with Republicans more frequently would soften the ground for substantive negotiations on fiscal issues and other matters.

"I think a lot of folks say, 'Well, if we look like we're being too cooperative or too chummy with the president that might cause us problems,'" Obama said, referring to the Republicans, in January. "'That might be an excuse for us to get a challenge from somebody in a primary.'"

The Republicans joining Obama for dinner may be less concerned with the political implications of sitting down with the Democratic president. Only Graham faces re-election next year.

Obama advisers say they're hopeful that without the heightened pressure of an imminent fiscal deadline, the president and Republicans can have constructive conversations on a broad deficit-reduction bill that would include concessions from the GOP on tax increases and from Democrats on entitlements.

But unless Boehner and McConnell bend on taxes, prospects for a sweeping deficit deal remain dim.

"You can't get around the leadership," said Patrick Griffin, who served as White House legislative director in the Clinton administration. "It's all about what happens going forward. Are the larger political dynamics going to change enough that Boehner and McConnell see it in their self-interest to change the way they position this?"

There's also no guarantee Obama and lawmakers won't find themselves facing a fiscal crisis in the coming months. The Senate still has to pass a bill funding the government after March 27 - the House passed its version of the measure Wednesday - and lawmakers will have to decide whether to raise the nation's debt limit in May.

Longer term, Rep. Paul Ryan previewed a 10-year plan on Wednesday that he said would eliminate federal deficits without raising taxes. That would tend to continue the budget standoff between the Republicans and Obama, who wants increased tax revenue to be part of any deal. But Ryan, the GOP vice presidential candidate in 2012, held out hope for communication across party lines.

The Wisconsin congressman, who also has spoken with Obama in recent days, said that "we're going to have to talk to each other to get an agreement about how to delay a debt crisis, how to save this country from a fiscal train wreck that's coming."

The president will have an opportunity to make his case to GOP leaders next week when he heads to Capitol Hill for separate meetings with the House and Senate Republican conferences. McConnell announced that Obama would attend the GOP Senate policy lunch, while Boehner's office said it was still working on a date.

Obama will also meet on Capitol Hill next week with House and Senate Democrats. The White House says all of the meetings were scheduled at the president's request.

White House aides said that while Wednesday's dinner would focus more narrowly on budget issues, the agenda for the lunches will be broader and will include discussions on immigration and gun control.

Even as Obama steps up his engagement with lawmakers, aides say he'll keep trying to build public support for his agenda and continues to believe pressure from the American people can force Republicans into action. Organizing for Action, a group run by former Obama campaign officials, sent an email Wednesday blaming "Republican obstructionism" for the sequester and urging supporters to sign a petition calling on Congress to back the president's approach for offsetting the cuts.

US, EU hopeful of new Iran nuke talks

SARAJEVO, Bosnia (AP) ? The U.S. and the European Union said Tuesday they'll press on with sanctions against Iran, even as they hope the promise of new negotiations could lead to a diplomatic solution ending the nuclear standoff.

Appearing together at a news conference in the Bosnian capital, U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton and EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said both diplomacy and pressure would continue until Iran makes significant concessions over its disputed uranium enrichment activity.

"We continue to try and find ways to move forward on our negotiations," Ashton told reporters in Sarajevo. She cited contact over the weekend between a top aide and an assistant to Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili, and said she would be reaching out to Jalili "in the near future."

Still, there appeared to be no significant advance in the process since world powers instructed Ashton last month in New York to speak with Jalili and gauge Iran's seriousness on coming into compliance with its international nuclear negotiations. The West fears Iran may be trying to develop nuclear weapons, a charge Tehran denies.

The West has demanded that Iran must stop enriching uranium to 20 percent purity, shut down its underground Fordo enrichment site and ship its 20 percent stockpile out of the country. In return, Iran has been offered civilian plane spare parts and 20 percent-enriched nuclear fuel for its medical research reactor in Tehran.

Clinton said the U.S. message to Iran is clear. "The window remains open to resolve the international community's concerns about your nuclear program diplomatically and to relieve your isolation, but that window cannot remain open indefinitely. Therefore, we hope that there can be serious good-faith negotiations commenced soon."

Iran has sent mixed signals on its nuclear program. World powers cited increased flexibility from Iran in September when they agreed to lay the groundwork for a new round of negotiations, and on Tuesday Iran's Foreign Ministry said the standoff could be resolved if the U.S. and its partners recognize Iran's right to produce nuclear fuel.

But senior Iranian officials also have threatened to boost enrichment levels if the West doesn't ease sanctions. And the U.S. and its partners say measures that are crippling the Iranian economy will remain in force until Tehran first starts coming into compliance with its international obligations.

Clinton and Ashton spoke during the first leg of a joint tour of the Balkans, where they were urging rivals ethnic groups and governments in Bosnia, Serbia and Kosovo to settle their differences for the good of their nations.

Seventeen years after the U.S.-led intervention ended Bosnia's civil war, Bosnia's Muslims, Serbs and Croats are split on how to unify the country or even to dissolve their federation entirely into separate ethnic parts. The Serb republic and the Bosniak-Croat federation have their own governments and parliaments, held together only weakly by a three-member presidency that Clinton and Ashton met with.

Clinton called efforts by some to roll back the Dayton Accords passed during the presidency of her husband "totally unacceptable," a reference to Bosnian Serb leader Milorad Dodik's call for the dissolution of Bosnia. He has also denied the genocide of Bosnia's Muslims in the 1990s.

Clinton urged all Bosnia's leaders to "put aside their political differences, put aside the rhetoric of dissolution, secession and denial of what tragically happened in the war." She and Ashton said the country's slow pace of reforms and the inability of leaders to look past their ethnic constituencies are holding back its hopes of joining the EU and NATO, and leaving it behind neighbors such as Serbia, Croatia and Kosovo.

Later in Belgrade, the two met Serbia's nationalist president, Tomislav Nikolic, and Prime Minister Ivica Dacic.

Clinton told them that normalizing ties with Kosovo, which broke off from Serbia four years ago, is critical for Serbian aspirations of entering the 27-nation European Union. She urged progress in talks with Kosovo about issues such as freedom of movement, customs, utilities and government services, without calling for Belgrade to immediately recognize the independence of its former province.

Clinton and Ashton then were to depart for Kosovo, where they'll press top officials on similar matters Wednesday. Afterward, Clinton will travel on alone to Croatia and Albania, NATO's two newest members.

Debt Settlement Employee Wants to Know Why PN Financial is a ...

A tipster, Rick, (send in your tips here) sent in the following comment:

?Please look into this company headquartered in Illinois. I work at a settlement company and we have major headaches due to this company setting up long term payment plans then when it is paid in full they never pay the creditor!

This has happened several times. So we have clients who have paid thousands to this agency and now have nothing to show for it and are of course coming after us!

Now we are getting reports from clients that they are sending letters to them saying they are willing to settle on XXXX for XXXX and these folks don?t even HAVE accounts with XXXX. Major major crooks and I have no idea how they continue to operate.?

PN Financial has a spotty past. A CBS Chicago story in April labeled PN Financial a debt settlement company and said they ripped off a consumer.

The CBS station called PN Financial ?a scam artist masquerading as a legitimate debt-collection agency.? ? Source

As the story went on to say, ?She forked over $1,800 but then found that PN Financial was taking the money for themselves, Mika says. None of it had gone to pay off her debt.?

That certainly sounds exactly like Rick?s statement and observation.

It seems to me we have two issues here.

The first is that debt relief companies should attempt to validate any debt with an outside party before beginning payment on it. If the debt can?t be validated or is outside the statute of limitations, that debt should be put aside will other priority unsecured debts are focused on.

The second is that it appears either Rick?s company or the consumer should file a complaint with the Illinois Attorney General and Federal Trade Commission. The debt settlement company may want to get their attorney involved.

According to the suit filed by the Illinois Attorney General, PN Financial ?emerged last year as one of the most egregious cases of illegal debt collection during her tenure as Attorney General.?

Additionally, Madigan said in some instances PN Financial attempted to collect debts it was not authorized to collect. As a result, some consumers paid PN Financial, without realizing they didn?t owe any outstanding balances to the collection company, and reported losing at least $9,000. PN Financial also contacted other consumers over debts that had already been paid off. ? Source

Hopefully, Rick?s company, and other debt relief companies will read this post before setting up any payment plan with PN Financial on behalf of a consumer.

I did contact PN Financial and ask them to respond but by the time of publication I still had not heard back from them.

If you have additional advice for Rick about on he and his company should deal with PN Financial on behalf of consumers, please post it in the comments section below.

Bean Bag Chair Adult Size: Bean Bag Chairs for Kids

Mums and dads must support these youngsters by maintaining them secure despite the fact
that they really are accomplishing their pursuits. Aside from looking after their safety parents

them bean bag chairs because these chairs are not only popular among kids but they also
allow kids to relax and be comfortable while they are doing something, be it reading,
watching TV, or playing outside.

Here are some settings where you find these seats are useful.

Personalized bean bags
Certainly one of the action that children will certainly cherish is personalizing their very own
these furniture since it calls for the kid's involvement and imagination. They can personalize
their chair by putting their favorite cartoon character on the surface or perhaps they could
engrave their initials instead. Designing lounge bag will definitely help kids develop their skills
in art using their own imagination. And with the help of the parents, this will certainly be an
entertaining activity that kids will surely love.

Outside bean bags
Children love the outdoors where they are usually found playing outside with friends; which is
why an outdoor bean bag will definitely be of use because it provides relaxation while they
are playing outside. there is no need to worry that children may have hard time carrying
these bags because in actuality these bags are made of light weight materials. These bags
are also durable because they need to withstand the harsh environment outside. You can
place these comfy chairs on patio, deck or the garden where children can relax if they are
tired from their activities outside.

Bean bag furniture
You can find these bags in every kids' rooms nowadays. Kids also like to spend time inside
their rooms when they do not have anything to do outside, which is why they are a great
addition in any their rooms. So, these are some great options that you can look for on the
subject of investing in a wonderful accessory for your kid. beanbagchairs.co

One unusual furniture that has gained popularity and may have replaced some of the
traditional home furnishings is the bean bag chair. Lately, people have also used these chairs
outside their homes replacing some of the traditional outdoor furniture such as bench and
swimming pool beds among others. We can attribute these changes for three motives:
durability, ease and total price. they are several of the features possessed by these chairs
that have led everyday people to order them being an alternative for their old fashioned your
home home furniture.

Longevity

This is one of the characteristics that people primarily look into before buying anything and
these chairs possess this quality. Manufacturers have considered making them very durable
because users tend to carry them on different places and then throw them on the ground.
Users would often kick these chairs as a way to move them on short distances which is why
manufacturers have built them to last. Moreover, the outdoor bean curd chairs were made
tougher because they are to be subjected to the harsh weather conditions and other
elements happening outdoors. There are instances wherein consumers use them as a
lounge chairs beside swimming pools and this is the reason why some chairs are made from
water and mold resistant materials. Other weather conditions such as the harsh rays of the
sun were also considered by the manufacturers and users never worry of just leaving them
outside.

Comfort
Another quality that these chairs possess is that they offer convenience and comfort. On the
convenience part, the size of these things can be considered big but they are easy to carry
around unlike traditional home furniture which requires two or more person to carry them.
Outdoor benches for illustration are incredibly challenging to move because they are made
from serious materials that include wooden and metallic. As a result they do not offer
flexibility which the furniture usually have. this have provided consumers the convenience
they usually seek in home furnishings.

Amount
These seats are also affordable and this quality is usually preferred by consumers rather
than the ultra expensive furniture Those expensive home furnishing may look sophisticated
and elegant than these seats but all of them provide the same levels of comfort. So
considering all the things that the article has provided, I believe puff's should not be taken
lightly. These chairs are simple and practical and they provide the same amount of comfort
that you may get from expensive home furnishings.

iPod nano review (2012)

iPod nano review 2012

If you think Apple is getting a little predictable with its yearly device refreshes, you probably haven't been charting the progress of its iPod nano. While most products in the Apple line receive an update every 12 months or so, few have experienced the kind of annual reinvention of the nano. It's a rare example of the company drastically re-thinking a product with such regularity -- or of simply not really knowing what to make of it.

Depending on how you look at it, this new seventh-generation iPod nano is either the latest, most optimal design of the long-running series, or it's Apple's latest shot in the dark. Even the cynics will have to agree this is a pretty good shot, thinner than ever and packing more functionality than in the past -- including Bluetooth 4.0. It sure doesn't make much of a wristwatch, but is the latest littlest iPod worth the $149 price of admission to its 16GB capacity? Read on to find out.

HBT: Bench A-Rod?? |? Grandy's been worse

Darren O?Day isn?t a conventional pitcher. He?s given plenty of quality right-handed hitters a tough time during his big-league career. Still, it was kind of telling that Alex Rodriguez couldn?t ?catch up to his 85-mph fastball in Thursday?s loss to the Orioles.

A-Rod did get a single and a walk in five plate appearances Thursday. However, Yankees manager Joe Girardi again made the call to pull him with the game on the line. Unlike Wednesday, it didn?t pay off tonight, as Eric Chavez lined out in his place to end the 13-inning marathon. Still, pretty much everyone figures A-Rod would have struck out anyway.

Starting Rodriguez against left-hander Joe Saunders on Thursday was the right move. Now that the Orioles are going back to a righty in Jason Hammel for Game 5, it?s time for Rodriguez to take a seat. His bat is too slow to make him a threat right now, and if he?s capable of guessing fastball and cheating on it, he certainly hasn?t showed it so far.

Chavez should play third base in his place. Chavez hit .298/.365/.543 with 16 homers in 245 at-bats against righties during the regular season. A-Rod hit .256/.326/.391 with 10 homers in 317 at-bats.

Really, as bad as A-Rod has looked, this doesn?t even make for a tough call. Rodriguez is hardly the only Yankee struggling ? Robinson Cano and Curtis Granderson aren?t getting it done either ? but Chavez has been the superior option against righties for months now and with the season on the line, the Yankees can?t afford to be going with their lesser players. It?d do or die, and A-Rod appears long dead.

Blind Chinese activist says nephew could face unfair trial

BEIJING (Reuters) - Blind legal activist Chen Guangcheng said on Saturday that Chinese police had sent the case of his nephew, charged with intentional infliction of injury, to the state prosecutor, paving the way for what he expects will be an unfair trial.

The case of Chen Guangcheng's nephew, Chen Kegui, has renewed international focus on China's human rights and legal system.

Chen has been held incommunicado by police for over five months and has been denied access to his choice of lawyers. His case is widely seen as illegitimate by Chen's family and human rights advocates.

Chen Guangcheng's escape from house arrest in northeastern China in April and subsequent refuge in the U.S. embassy caused huge embarrassment for China, and led to a serious diplomatic rift between the two superpowers.

Chen Kegui was initially charged with "intentional homicide" for using knives to fend off local officials who burst into his home on April 27, the day after they discovered his uncle had escaped.

Chen Guangcheng told Reuters he believed the police downgraded the charge because they had no evidence to build a case of "intentional homicide" against his nephew.

"Judging from the current situation, my confidence in Chen Kegui getting a fair hearing has dropped a lot," Chen Guangcheng said by telephone in New York, where he is now studying law.

Chen Guangcheng said the central government has failed to live up to its promise in May to investigate officials in Shandong whom he accused of engineering the "years of illegal persecution" against him and his family.

"It's been five months, I haven't heard any news about the investigation against Shandong," he said. "Instead I hear that Chen Kegui's case has been sent to the prosecutor, this piece of news in itself is problematic. So how can I not feel that my confidence has been lowered?"

Police in Yinan in Shandong, where Chen Kegui is held in a detention center, were not immediately available for comment.

The prosecutor "almost always accepts the recommendation" made by the police, said Jerome Cohen, an expert in Chinese law from New York University.

"This makes Chen (Kegui)'s prosecution and conviction highly likely," Cohen said in an emailed statement.

Chen Kegui's family-appointed lawyer, Ding Xikui, said he will travel to Yinan next week to see his client, adding that he could not say for certain the maximum sentence that Chen Kegui faces as he has not reviewed the case or seen his client.

The proceedings against Chen Kegui will be a good test case of whether Chinese leaders are intent on enforcing the rule of law and enacting reforms, said Chen Guangcheng.

"I think that if the authorities, at this point, once again don't make the correct choice and once again refuse to safeguard social justice and continue maintaining their own privileges, they are inadvertently announcing to the world: 'You ordinary folk, we just don't want to enforce the rule of law, we want to make hostages out of you ordinary people," Chen said.

After four years in jail on what he and his supporters say were trumped-up charges designed to end his activism, Chen was released in 2010 and put under house arrest in Shandong.

Chen had accused Shandong officials in 2005 of forcing women to have late-term abortions and sterilizations to comply with China's strict family-planning policies. He was charged with whipping up a crowd that disrupted traffic and damaged property.

Raising Funds for Kent Youth Lacrosse ... - East West Martial Arts

Raising Funds for Kent Youth Lacrosse Scholarship ProgramChestertown East West Martial Arts

Reed is in the intermediate class at East West Martial Arts.? To progress towards his next belt he decided to help raise funds for Kent Youth Lacrosse Scholarship Program.? One of Reed?s favorite sports besides martial arts is playing Lacrosse.? His idea was to make use of old planters at his Mom?s work and sell these to raise money towards the scholarship program.

When asked about his project he explained.

?At my mom?s work, I?asked her what containers she did not need in the warehouse.? I helped her bring them home.? Then I cleaned them and sorted them.? I helped make a poster explaining what the money will go to and I sold them at the Chestertown Farmers Market.? Money from this project will help kids from Kent County afford to play Lacrosse in the spring.? It was really nice to raise over $100 and donate it to Kent Youth Lacrosse.? I love lacrosse and now other kids will be able to play too.?? We handed the check to Mr. Clint Evans, President of Kent Youth Lacrosse.?

Great job Reed!

Joe Biden's smiling: Was there a method to his madness?

Could Vice President Joe Biden?s incessant smiling (or smirking, depending on your point of view) during the debate have been deliberate?

By asking this, we don?t just mean that Mr. Biden had a strategy to be aggressive and try to disqualify his much younger opponent by refusing to appear to take him seriously. That's obvious enough.

No, we?re wondering if something even more calculated could have been going on.

RECOMMENDED: Presidential debate: 7 defining moments in history (+ video)

Here?s our thinking: There was much to criticize about President Obama?s performance in last week?s debate ? but the biggest failing, in the eyes of many of his supporters, was his lack of animation and firepower. He just seemed disengaged, so flat and feeble that viewers on both sides of the aisle agreed he?d essentially ceded the stage.

Biden?s challenge Thursday night was not only to reenergize dispirited liberals ? but, maybe even more important, to set the stage for Mr. Obama?s next debate, which comes in just four days.

This time, Obama clearly will need to raise his energy level and give a more impassioned performance than the one he turned in last week. But he can?t appear too heated, too dramatically different ? or the effort could seem artificial and even desperate.

This is the trap that Al Gore fell into back in 2000. Widely criticized for his demeanor in his first presidential debate ? particularly those now-infamous sighs ? he made an obvious effort to change his approach in the next round. The result? He was panned again, this time for what seemed like a too-transparent attempt to be more likable.

So the challenge for Obama will be to carefully calibrate his next performance, correcting his previous mistakes without making it seem like he?s overcompensating.

And that?s where Biden?s incessant, aggressive smiling comes in. By taking his own animation level right through the roof, Biden may have given Obama a little more room to emote on Tuesday, without seeming like he?s overdoing it.

Because everyone just saw what overdoing it looks like ? thanks to Biden.

As MSNBC?s First Read put it Friday morning: ?Biden ? by turning his volume to 11 last night ? takes some ? pressure off the president. If you've followed Obama over the past six years, you know it's not his style to be overly aggressive. Well, Biden last night both gave Obama a road map for how to attack Romney-Ryan (on abortion, tax fairness, foreign policy), and he gave him room to do it in the way he feels most comfortable.?

The really interesting question is whether Biden possibly did this on purpose. True, putting in an over-the-top performance may not ultimately help him in his own presidential ambitions. But if Obama loses the election, Biden?s presidential hopes go up in smoke, anyway.

In other words, sometimes you have to take one for the team. And while it may ultimately be too much of a stretch, it doesn't seem entirely impossible, either, that on Thursday night, Biden may have done just that.

Decades of Miss Subways smiled on NYC straphangers

NEW YORK (AP) ? It was an ad campaign conceived as eye candy to bring attention to other advertisements in New York's transit system. But the "Meet Miss Subways" beauty contest posters of pretty young New York women and their aspirations quickly evolved into a popular and even groundbreaking fixture that ran for 35 years, from 1941 to 1976.

When photographer Fiona Gardner first learned about it she "immediately wanted to know what happened to all the women."

She set out to find out.

The result is "Meet Miss Subways: New York's Beauty Queens 1941-76," an exhibition at the New York Transit Museum running Oct. 23-March 25, and a companion book of the same name.

The contest reflected an evolving America. When it was launched, the war already was changing the role of women. From 1952 to 1962, the contest featured schoolteachers, stewardesses and suburban housewives; the next 10 years saw secretaries and airplane pilots.

The first African-American was crowned Miss Subways in 1948 ? long before Vanessa Williams was named Miss America in 1984 ? and the first Asian-American was honored in 1949.

"It was the first integrated and ethnically diverse beauty contest in America," representing working-class women, said Gardner, who was born the year the contest ended. "I realized I had stumbled on a piece of forgotten New York history."

Her interest was piqued in 2004 after seeing some of the original posters on the walls of Ellen's Stardust Diner, whose owner Ellen Hart Strum was crowned Miss Subways in 1959. The winners' future dreams were listed along with their headshots; many wanted to be models or singers, while others yearned to travel ? "Europe four times, no less," read the Miss Subways poster of Maureen Walsh Roaldsen in 1968. The first Miss Subways, Mona Freeman, even went on to become a movie star after being discovered by Howard Hughes.

But for most, the subway placard was their only moment in the spotlight, and finding the former winners was a challenge for Gardner. The contest archives were lost. Many of the women had married and changed their names, some had moved, still others had died.

She searched the Internet, voter registration and municipal archives and even hired a private eye. With journalist Amy Zimmer, she tracked down 146 Miss Subways posters and interviewed 41 winners in person. Together they collaborated on the book, with Gardner taking the women's portraits wearing their Miss Subways sashes at home or at work.

"Many of these women are very interesting and have accomplished many things. You realize there's a much more complex story behind the headshots. Many of them went back and had second and third careers," said Gardner.

Marcia Kilpatrick Hocker's dream to study with the Negro Ensemble Company repertory theater came true. She auditioned after becoming Miss Subways in 1975, calling the contest "very confidence-boosting."

"I'm basically very shy. ... I didn't know I would be representing Miss Subways at various functions, speaking at kickoff events, addressing school groups," the 65-year-old Hocker said in a telephone interview from Gresham, Ore., where she now lives.

She wanted to be Miss Subways because she "wanted to be discovered. I wanted to do commercials and be an actress," Hocker said.

She married an American diplomat in 1981 and lived for a time in Colombia and New Zealand. She put her talents to use, singing at embassy functions and coaching American children in drama. For the past 11 years, she's been a DJ at Jazz Radio KMHD in Portland.

For the first 22 years, winners were selected by the John Robert Powers modeling agency and the New York Subways Advertising Company. Afterward, it became a more democratic contest, with straphangers voting via postcard for their favorite finalist.

Changing times including the women's movement, the city's fiscal crisis and rampant graffiti in the transit system brought an end to the contest.

Only 17 when she won, Strum's poster said she wanted to pursue an acting career and devote all her spare time to acting, singing and speech lessons.

"For a while I was known as the national anthem singer," the 71-year-old said. In the 1980s Strum sang The Star-Spangled Banner for the Knicks and Rangers games as one of Madison Square Garden's rotating singers. She also sang at official city functions.

She married and had two sons. Her retro 1950s-themed restaurant opened in 1987, featuring singing waiters and 70 Miss Subways posters. She also stages Miss Subways reunions at the diner.

Roaldsen, 67, a 1968 winner, is coming to the next one Nov. 13 for the book's launch party.

She was 23 and working as a secretary at Downstate Medical Center when she won. On weekends, she greeted VIPs and celebrities at the Diamond Club at Shea Stadium.

As Miss Subways she represented New York. Among the perks was attending Richard Nixon's inauguration and going to the premier of "Finian's Rainbow" at the Ziegfeld Theatre, where she briefly met Fred Astaire.

She married and continued to travel, her passion. In her 40s she launched a new career as an attorney for the New York State Appellate Court.

It wasn't a real beauty contest, said Hocker. "It was about a well-groomed young woman who in addition to wanting to be a wife and mom, had aspirations to do something to contribute to the community at large."

Cervical cancer vaccine in early stages ? The Chart - CNN.com Blogs

The most common sexually transmitted disease is often silent and invisible: human papillomavirus (also called HPV). But in some people HPV leads to genital warts and cancers ? notably, cervical cancer.

The vaccines Gardasil and Cervarix were designed as a prevention for young women who have not yet been exposed to HPV. Men up to age 26 are also eligible for Gardasil to protect against HPV. But there are a lot of people out there who still have HPV, and nothing protects against all 130 strains of the virus. At least half of all sexually active males and females have had HPV, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

A Pennsylvania start-up company called Inovio Pharmaceuticals has developed an experimental vaccine for people who already have HPV and precancerous lesions that are associated with it. A new study demonstrating the vaccine's safety and potential effectiveness was published this week in the journal Science Translational Medicine.

The experimental vaccine does not use the live HPV virus; it is formulated in synthetic DNA and pure water. It uses the immune system of the treated women to fight off cancer, said Joseph Kim, president and CEO of Inovio Pharmaceuticals and study co-author.

Worldwide, cervical cancer is the second most common cancer after breast cancer, with about 493,000 new cases and 274,000 deaths annually, the study said. HPV causes about 5% of cancers globally.

Some women, because of their particular genetic makeup, can clear precancerous lesions on their own and would not need this vaccine. This happens in anywhere from 10% to 25% of women infected with HPV, Kim said.

No one knows why some women have this capability and others do not, but for those who lack it the Inovio vaccine is "giving our immune system a little boost," Kim said.

Eighteen women with high-grade precancerous cervical lesions participated in the phase 1 study.

Study authors say the vaccine is formulated to work against all cancers caused by HPV types 16 and 18, including cervical, anogenital (anal and genital), and head and neck cancers. The researchers did not observe any side effects.

In the next phase of this research 150 women worldwide are participating, but they are not included in these published results, Kim said.

The phase 1 results are very early in the experimentation of this vaccine. The study was not done as a randomized controlled trial, the gold standard for determining whether a drug works better than chance. Also, 18 people is a small number for examining the effects of a medication.

Given those drawbacks, it?s not appropriate to draw too many conclusions from this study, says Dr. Diane Harper, a prominent HPV researcher at the University of Missouri ? Kansas City?s School of Medicine. Harper contributed to the studies on both HPV vaccines that are currently available, Cervarix and Gardasil, and is not involved with this research.

?Several therapeutic vaccines have shown great promise in phase 1 and then not panned out in phase 2,? she noted in an e-mail.

The vaccine consists of three injections in the arm over three months, Kim said. The vaccine trains T-cells in the body to go after cervical cells with potentially cancerous genes embedded in them.

Inovio is using this technology to develop vaccines for prostate cancer and HIV also, Kim said.

?We certainly have a technology that can change the medical field by being able to program and generate strong immune responses that are specific and effective,? he said.

Kim said the next phase results should be out at the end of 2013; then comes a larger phase 3 trial with about 500 patients, to be concluded around 2016 or 2017.

HPV is spread through genital contact, including oral sex, and partners can bounce the virus back and forth between them, making it harder to clear naturally. Kissing is not known to deliver this STD.

Bye, 'Jersey Shore'! The women are ready to go

By Ree Hines, TODAY contributor

The sixth and final season of "Jersey Shore" just premiered on MTV last week, but for the stars of the show, it's already over. On Thursday morning, Jennifer "JWoww" Farley, Sammi Giancola and Deena Nicole Cortese visited TODAY and shared what the future holds for them now.

For JWoww, the "Shore" won't be too far behind her as she continues her spinoff, "Snooki & JWoww," which will no doubt see her planning her upcoming nuptials.

But Sammi and Deena aren't spinoff bound -- at least not yet. Instead, they're focusing on other ways to make it post-"Shore."

"I have my workout line, two perfumes, a men's cologne and a clutch line coming out," Sammi explained.

In addition to clothing line and a perfume of her own, Deena is breaking out into another form of entertainment.

"I've been doing voice overs for ? cartoons," she said. "I feel like I'm a character myself, so why not be a character?"

But what about the other lady of "Jersey Shore"? For Nicole "Snooki" Polizzi, who didn't join her pals Thursday, the future (as well as the present) not only holds her show with pal JWoww but more importantly, her son, little Lorenzo.

The woman all agreed, she's an amazing mom.

"She's still herself, but she changed for the better," Sammi said. "(Snooki's) so much more mature."

Will you keep up with the ladies as they move on to other adventures? Tell us on our Facebook page.

PFT: NFL reportedly probing hit on Cushing

Rex RyanAP

This morning, Jets owner Woody Johnson made a clear commitment to starting quarterback Mark Sanchez.? Johnson also said quarterback Tim Tebow will be with the team for three years, the balance of his rookie deal.

This afternoon, coach Rex Ryan indirectly but unmistakably disputed Johnson?s account, as to both players.

As to Sanchez, Ryan said the fourth-year starter will remain the starter.? But Ryan wasn?t nearly as clear about the future as Johnson was regarding Sanchez.

?A lot of things can happen,? Ryan said, via Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News.? ?And I?m not going to deal with what ifs because . . . I?m telling you right now [that] he?s our starting quarterback this week, barring injury.? And things happen.? I feel really confident in Mark. . . .? I?ve never wavered on him.?

Ryan revisited the issue later in the media session.? ?He?s our starter.? What do you want me to say?? Ryan said.? ?He?s our starter.? He?s our starter this week. He?s our starter.?

The key words seem to be ?this week,? and the reason for Ryan?s reluctance to give an open-ended commitment to Sanchez is obvious.? Even if the team doesn?t plan to bench a guy, sometimes the threat of benching a guy helps get the most out of him.

It?s a tactic that Ryan has used twice in the past two years.? And Ryan admitted to it in his 2011 book, Play Like You Mean It.

?I started giving our backup quarterback, Mark Brunell, more snaps in practice just to let Sanchez know I wasn?t kidding around,? Ryan wrote regarding a rough spot Sanchez hit in 2010.? ?Now, it got Sanchez?s ass going sideways a little bit.? He wasn?t happy at all.? When he was in my office, he was pouting a little about it, but I could give less than two shits about that.?

As to Tebow, Ryan also was less absolute than Johnson regarding the question of whether Tebow will be on the team for three years.

?When we traded for Tim, we understood his contract situation,? Ryan said.? ?We brought him in because we think Tim?s a good football player.? With that being said ? and this goes for any player ? we think the guys will be with us throughout the length of the contract, but if, you know . . . there?s no guarantee there that if there?s , you know, whatever, an opportunity to help your football team. . . .? If we see fit . . . whatever?s in the best interest of our team. . . .? I guess no player is totally guaranteed that they?ll be there.? But clearly he?s a guy that we thought a lot of and that?s why we traded for him.? And still think a lot of.?

Ryan surely can?t think a lot of Johnson making commitments that don?t mesh with the strategic objectives of the football operation, and that?s one of the reasons why some teams insist on having only ?one voice? speak for the franchise.? Since the ?once voice? approach likely isn?t practical in this day and age, the folks who do the talking for a team need to be equipped at all times with comprehensive talking points ? and they need to know how to stick to them.
