Pelican Anglican: Friends

Mark Zuckerberg designed Facebook to connect people.? According to Facebook, I have literally hundreds of friends. ?

Mind you, I have never met some of my friends.? We have never exchanged a spoken word, shared a meal, gone to a movie together, or laid eyes on each other.? For that matter, we have never even commented on each other?s status.

And yet, there you are.? I have hundreds of friends.? Only, this is not what any of us actually means by the word ?friend? in the usual sense.? Friends answer a basic need in our souls.? Everybody wants to connect to somebody.

Even members of the Facebook staff and the most devoted user of the medium know that peeking at someone else?s pictures and reading their clever status updates will not save us from loneliness.

They know, just like we know, that everybody wants to connect to somebody.? We want someone to confide in and laugh with.? Cry to and count on. ?

Someone with whom we?ve made memories and still make plans.? Someone who will hold our hand in the dark and put sunscreen on our back.

That?s a friend.? Jesus said that his followers are his friends.? (John 15:13-15)? That?s why Quakers call Church the Society of Friends.

Through the power of the Holy Spirit, Jesus gives us the gift of the Church.? He means for it to be a community, a community of his friends, called together to be friends with each other and to be the channel through which he changes the world in the process.

But I?m getting ahead of myself.? I?ve said a mouthful here, and I need to take a step back to explain myself.? On this Holy Feast of Pentecost, we celebrate the coming of the Holy Spirit to form, empower, and send the Church into the world.

I want us to be clear about what the Church is, and what the Church isn?t. ?

So let?s look first at how the community we call the Church comes about.? Then we will look at the kinds of relationships that make this community what it is.? And finally, we?ll look at how the community fits into the world, or perhaps doesn?t fit.

Friendship of Mercy

Let?s trace the community we call the Church to its origins.? People did not start the Church.? Neither do we perpetuate it.? God himself created and sustains the Church.

In chapter two of Acts, we read the familiar story about the Day of Pentecost.? Following the Ascension, the disciples and Mary wait for nine days in the upper room.? Then, the Holy Spirit descends upon them with a mighty wind and tongues of fire.? Just as the Holy Spirit had moved over the deep at the creation of all things, the Holy Spirit now fills and entwines the disciples into a new creation: the Church.

John provides a different account of the same event.? Jesus himself appeared in that upper room.? He said, ?Receive the Holy Spirit,? and breathed on his disciples.? They become one by breathing the same holy air.

The Apostle John especially helps us to see that Jesus is creating a community of friends.? Jesus reaches out in friendship.? He takes the initiative.? But Jesus? friendship is like no other.

The philosopher Aristotle outlined three types of friendship.? Let?s take a look at Aristotle?s list in order to show how very different friendship with Jesus is.

Aristotle begins with the most superficial sort of relationships: friendships of utility.? We would normally call these relationships mere acquaintances.? Our connection with another person has nothing to do with that person, but on a common interest. ?

For instance, she may have something to sell that I want to buy.? Once the deal is done, the relationship is over.? There is nothing bad about this kind of relationship.? It is merely superficial and does not address our need for connection at a very deep level.

What we would normally call friendship arises when we enjoy another person?s company.? We like to hunt together or drink together or shop together or play tennis together.? A common activity creates a bond between us. ?

But when we no longer enjoy the activity we once shared, we often lose touch with each other.? Aristotle called this kind of bond a friendship of pleasure.

Aristotle realized that we needed both of these kinds of friendship, but he also insisted that we need something even deeper. ?

We yearn to connect with someone because of who he is, and for that person to connect with us because of who we are.? Friendships of the good, as Aristotle called them, are bonds of mutual affection and admiration for the enduring character of the other person.

For Aristotle, this is the highest form of friendship.? But Jesus offers something more.? He offers a friendship of mercy, as only he can.

Jesus does not draw near to us because we have something he needs.? Nor does he reach out to us because we?re loads of fun.? In fact, he comes to us precisely when our character itself is in need of some serious work, work that we cannot do ourselves.

Jesus reaches his hand out to us precisely when we are flat on our backs, hard to live with, and not much use to anybody, including ourselves.? He offers us a hand up when we are face down in the mess of this life.

When we take the hand of friendship that he extends, two things happen.? First, who we are changes forever.? Theologians call this regeneration.? A new set of motives for action and lenses for seeing others and ourselves begin to take hold in our souls.

The second thing that happens when we befriend Jesus is that we become friends with all of his friends.? But that leads us to the next question.? Just what sort of community is the Church?

Any Friend of His is a Friend of Mine

The Church is the community of the friends of Jesus.? This might take some of us a minute to get our heads around. ?

I have emphasized that following Jesus involves a personal relationship with him, a friendship of mercy.? That might make you think that being a Christian begins and ends with our private relationship with Jesus, that it all boils down to me and Jesus.

If that were true, it would be as if the Church were simply a big sandbox.? Each of us is in the sandbox to play with Jesus.? We play one-on-one with him, but being with Jesus does not require that we play with each other.? Church would just be a place where we all engage in parallel play.

But the Church is much more than this.? St. Paul says that it is a Body, the Body of Christ.? And he urges the members of this Body to be one by sharing the mind of Christ.? (1 Corinthians 12:12-31; Philippians 2:5-8)

Think about it this way.? Each of us is a friend of Jesus.? And part of being his friend is to say, ?Any friend of his is a friend of mine.?

In other words, we learn to see each follower of Christ as our own friend through Christ.? Christ has made me a part of him.? And because he has done the same for all of you, you are part of me and I am part of you through him.

Our relationships with each other intersect through him, and as long as we are devoted to him, our relationship with each other can never wither.

Look at how this explodes a common misconception of the Church.? Some people think of the Church as filled with hypocrites that assume a posture of moral superiority over those outside the Church.

Nothing could be further from the truth.? We are people drawn together by the one who gives us the mercy we so desperately need.? Jesus sees how fragile and flawed we are, and he reaches out tenderly to remold us.

Because we see each other through him, we see each other as needing mercy and being wonderfully transformed by that same mercy.? At least, we do that on our best days.

That is how we relate to each other within the Church.? And it shapes how we relate to those outside the Church.? This leads us to our final question.? How does this community of friends fit into the world?

Friendship is Countercultural

The apostle John draws a clear distinction between the followers of Jesus and the world.? He says that the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, will prove the world wrong about sin and righteousness and judgment.? (John 16:9) ? And he will do it through the Church.

The Church is countercultural.? When we get life in community right, we show the world a different way to live.? Instead of competition we model compassion.? We celebrate our interdependence and admit our weakness, while the world prizes pushing one?s own agenda through strength.

We accept everyone on their own terms, waiting with joyful expectation for their transformation in Christ.? The world accepts and rejects on the basis of achievements and potential usefulness.

The Church is powerful, but it does not properly use coercion.? The power of the Church is attraction, because the might of the Church is Jesus Christ: love incarnate.

We all yearn for connection.? That loneliness that we each have felt from time to time tells us that we are not complete in isolation.? Church is God?s answer to our loneliness. ?

In the beginning, some come to Church because of our loneliness for other people.? But in time, we discover that deeper down we are lonely for God. ?

And when we are finally at home with God, we find that we are able to be with people in a way that we had never before imagined. ?

As friends of Christ, we can truly be friends with men and women.? They no longer have to meet our needs in the same way they did before.? Instead, leaning on Christ, we can love others as a free gift, reflecting the love for them that Christ so prodigally gives.

Crossroads announcing $25 million ad push

WASHINGTON (AP) ? An independent group favoring Republican presidential rival Mitt Romney is launching a $25 million, monthlong advertising campaign in 10 states against President Barack Obama, further escalating an expensive TV ad war in presidential battlegrounds six months before Election Day.

Crossroads GPS plans to open the effort Thursday by spending $8 million on a TV ad that castigates Obama on the economy by using his own words against him.

"We need solutions, not just promises," says a 60-second commercial that's to run in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Michigan, North Carolina, New Hampshire, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania and Virginia.

It shows clips of Obama making pledges that critics say he hasn't kept on issues like taxes, health care and federal deficits.

"We must help the millions of homeowners who are facing foreclosure," Obama says in a clip from June 2008. The ad then says: "Promise broken. One in five mortgages are still under water."

Obama, Romney and their allies are in a rush to define each other negatively in voters' eyes before Americans tune out during the summer. And already both sides are going for the jugular, a sign of a sharply negative race between now and November.

Crossroads GPS' ad push is the latest to illustrate the degree to which this presidential campaign is playing out under dramatically looser campaign finance laws in the wake of a series of Supreme Court decisions that allowed independent groups to raise and spend unlimited donations as long as they don't coordinate directly with the campaigns they support.

It also comes at a time when several other Republican-leaning super PACs have been spending millions on ads in key states to tear down Obama while Romney ? the underfunded challenger to the record-shattering Democratic president ? focuses on raising money after a primary season that left him broke and battered.

The super PAC Restore Our Future, staffed with former Romney aides, has spent $4.3 million, while Americans for Prosperity, the Koch brothers' group, has spent $5 million. The American Future Fund, whose goal is to promote conservative and free-market ideas, is spending an additional $4.7 million to run a one-minute ad suggesting Obama hasn't cracked down on Wall Street because of his campaign's fundraising. "Tell Obama to stop protecting his Wall Street donors," the ad says.

On the Democratic side, Obama's campaign has launched its own $25 million, month-long ad push in the most competitive general election states. In recent days, it's started going after Romney's business credentials, specifically his time at the helm of the private equity firm Bain Capital. The campaign was running an ad Wednesday on the matter but in just a handful of states and at a very low price tag, just under $100,000.

But the real money to promote the same message was coming from a pro-Obama super PAC, Priorities USA Action. It's spending $4 million to air its new ad, which is remarkably similar to the one from the Obama campaign. Both highlight the failure of GST Steel, a Kansas City, Mo.-based company purchased by Bain Capital that went bankrupt and laid off 750 workers in 2001.

Unlike the groups on the right, Priorities USA Action has struggled to raise money, taking in about $10 million through its super PAC and affiliated nonprofit arm by the end of March. The group has spent only $2.7 million on ads in May.

Still, Obama's campaign opened the month of April with more than $100 million in the bank, a 10-to-1 fundraising advantage over Romney.

But the president's edge is minimized by the campaign cash raised by Republican-leaning super PACs.

Crossroads GPS told the IRS it raised more than $77 million through December. Donors could include individuals, businesses or trade groups. Without naming names, Crossroads reported two gifts of $10 million each and four of more than $4 million.

American Crossroads, its ally, has raised $100 million so far this election cycle to defeat Obama and support the Republican nominee. Combined, the Crossroads twins have announced plans to spend as much as $300 million to influence the presidential election, with longtime George W. Bush political adviser Karl Rove guiding them.

While the Republican groups legally can't coordinate directly with the Romney campaign, they do coordinate with each other. Leaders of some leading Republican super PACs attend a monthly meeting hosted by Crossroads to share information and devise strategy to deny Obama a second term. That may mean, for example, taking turns ensuring Romney has a presence on the air ? or, rather, the Republican criticisms against Obama are aired ? even if his campaign itself can't afford to run its own ads yet.

The Romney campaign has spent no money on TV ads since Romney's Republican opponents dropped out and cleared his path to the nomination.

Republicans have generally welcomed the emergence of super PACs, and several GOP-leaning groups spent millions to take control of the House and pick up six Senate seats in 2010. Obama sharply criticized the emergence of super PACs that year but ultimately green-lighted contributions to Priorities USA Action after it became clear that his campaign and other Democrats would be vastly outgunned otherwise.

By law, campaigns and the outside groups are forbidden from working with each other. But at times like this, the lines of separation seem blurred if not crossed.

Strategists for the super PACs insist they are operating independently and are not relying on signals from the presidential campaigns as to what advertising strategy to pursue. But campaign finance watchdogs are crying foul, arguing that super PACs have effectively become high-dollar shadow campaign operations for candidates otherwise constrained by much stricter federal campaign finance rules.

"Candidate-specific super PACs are simply arms of the presidential campaigns and need to be treated as such and be subject to contribution limits," said Fred Wertheimer of Democracy 21, a campaign finance reform advocacy group. "The idea that these groups are independent is a fiction in reality terms and, we believe, a fiction in legal terms."

Cameron hears Green Deal concerns

The Green Deal has been under scrutiny in Downing Street this afternoon after warnings that it is liable to fail.

The Cabinet Office interviewed critics of the scheme and reported their concerns to the Prime Minister, Deputy Prime Minister and Energy Secretary.

The Deal - to insulate the UK's aged housing stock - is designed to save carbon emissions, keep people warm, and make energy affordable.

But critics say it won't give enough help to the fuel poor.

They say this is a scandal after the recent warning that the number of people unable to afford their energy bills is likely to rise to 8.5 million.

They also warn the Deal may waste ?2-3bn of people's energy bills.

A Downing Street spokesman said the meeting was routine, adding: "The Deputy Prime Minister and Prime Minister are fully committed to [the Green Deal]."

But he said many issues over the scheme, due to launch in the Autumn, were still to be resolved. This will come as a relief to the many critics of the Deal.

The Green Deal is split into two parts. The larger part relies on householders voluntarily taking pay-as-you-save loans to cut energy bills through home insulation. The private sector is supposed to deliver the improvements.

The other part of the programme, known as ECO, will subsidise people to insulate their homes if they can't do it without help. This will be funded through a ?1.3bn-a-year charge against all of our energy bills.

But there is a dispute over the priorities.

'Widespread' complaints

The government says most lofts and cavity walls are already insulated under previous schemes so it wants to offer grants on much more expensive solid wall insulation.

Solid walls will ultimately have to be made warmer if the UK housing stock meets expectations for reducing carbon emissions. But it is thought that at first this expensive and disruptive option will be mostly taken up by affluent households.

It is crazy if the Green Deal fails to ensure that all the homes in the country at least have adequate loft insulation?

End Quote Andrew Warren Association for Conservation of Energy

Critics say it makes no sense to insulate solid walls at approximately ?7,500 a home when you can insulate lofts of the "fuel poor" for ?500 a home.

They also argue that the ECO subsidies scheme will force low-income families to pay extra on their fuel bills to subsidise solid wall insulation for more wealthy homes.

Complaints have been so widespread that a Cabinet Office team was detailed to interview the critics, who estimate that by pushing money towards solid walls rather than lofts the government could waste between ?2bn and ?3bn of energy bill payers' money in coming years.

"It is crazy if the Green Deal fails to ensure that all the homes in the country at least have adequate loft insulation," said Andrew Warren of the Association for Conservation of Energy, an industry lobby group.

"Loft insulation and cavity wall insulation are the basic first steps in terms of effectiveness. Treating solid walls is a very much more expensive option that'll have to be paid for by the energy consumers whose bills will be funding the Green Deal.

"The number of people in fuel poverty is rising. If you get the policy right you can tackle fuel poverty by getting everyone's lofts and cavity walls insulated."

This was a common criticism when the government opened the Green Deal to consultation at Christmas, and ministers have shifted ground since.

Stopping short?

In April, the Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg promised that of the ?1.3bn ECO subsidies, at least ?540m should save energy in the worst-off homes. He said: "Each year this money will help 180,000 of the poorest households make their homes cheaper to heat for good."

But this doesn't go far enough for the critics, who are baffled by the Department of Energy and Climate Change's (Decc) assertion that it is time to focus on solid walls because almost all lofts and cavity walls are already done.

A recent Decc document shows that only 60% of homes (14.1 million out of 23.3 million) currently have an adequate insulation blanket of at least 125mm.

Ron Campbell of the charity National Energy Action told BBC News: "There is no question - all of the resources under ECO should be devoted to programmes related to poverty.

"We were constantly reassured that funding under ECO would be significantly higher than government funding in previous years but this is untrue. Expenditure on fuel poverty programmes is half of what it was."

The pay-as-you-save side of the Green Deal is also wobbling because few people in the energy sector believe it will deliver the savings in energy and carbon needed for UK climate change targets. Buildings are responsible for more than 40% of UK emissions.

The Cabinet Office team has been told that the Chancellor should nudge people into the Green Deal by changing Stamp Duty to reward householders who have insulated their homes, or punish those who haven't.

The government hope that the energy firms will promote the Deal to householders. But energy conservation is a notorious hassle and critics say it'll need a huge national public campaign.

Golden rule

A Green Alliance report compared the Green Deal with the recent digital TV switchover and concluded: "There is a huge risk that the government's current plans for communications won't deliver the levels of take-up needed to make sure the Green Deal (is) a success." The author, Faye Scott, says the scheme needs strong, trusted national branding.

But I understand that the International Energy Agency has warned that many people won't participate in the scheme because they don't trust the energy firms after rows over high prices and mis-selling of products.

The government insists that insulation schemes offered under the Green Deal should follow the so-called Golden Rule that the improvements must be paid back during the agreed loan period.

A trial in Sutton in South East London suggested that bills were reduced by between ?170 and ?270 a year. Press reports said that under that trial, 25% of improvements did not meet the Golden Rule.

Sutton Council told BBC New that the households in question were informed that their investments would not pay back in time but had opted to go ahead with them anyway because they felt that energy bills would go up in future, they wanted to improve comfort in the home, or they were willing to invest in energy-saving to protect the environment.

Posted on May 16, 2012 in Personal Finance | 0 comments

Before you file for bankruptcy, make sure you absolutely need to. You may find consolidating your debt may be simpler. Filing a claim can take a long time and cause much stress. It will have a long-lasting effect of your future credit opportunities. Therefore, before you file for bankruptcy you need to consider all of your alternatives.

Be persistent in researching information about filing for bankruptcy and consult a qualified personal bankruptcy attorney. You might even be able to get back secured property that has been repossessed in the 90 days before filing. You may be able to get your property back if fewer than 90 days have passed between the repossession and are filing for bankruptcy. Talk with an attorney who can guide you through the process of filing a petition.

Do some research online about personal bankruptcy to get a better idea of what this procedure implies. The United States Department of Justice, NACBA, and American Bankruptcy Institute websites are all great places to go for up-to-date information. By being well armed with the correct knowledge, you can be certain of the decision that you have made. Additionally, you will understand the processes necessary to conduct your personal bankruptcy matters in a smooth manner.

When you file for bankruptcy, you don?t necessarily get all of your debts discharged. When a Chapter 13 is filed, you will restructure what you owe and pay, thus allowing your creditors to make some of their money back. Many people do not want to file bankruptcy, because they feel that not paying their debts is irresponsible. A Chapter 13 filing is an excellent compromise that can relieve financial burdens without disappointing creditors.

Remember to spend some quality time with your loved ones. Bankruptcy proceedings can be extremely harsh. It is long, hard and sometimes leaves people feeling guilty or ashamed. Lots of people decide they should hide from everyone else until it is all over. This is not recommended because you will only feel bad and this may cause you to feel depressed. Therefore, it is important that you continue to spend quality time with your loved ones despite, in spite of your current financial situation.

Ask those you know if they have an attorney to recommend, instead of finding one on the Internet or in the phone book. There are a number of companies who may take advantage of your situation, so always work with someone that is trustworthy.

Determine which of assets are safe from seizure and which are not before filing for personal bankruptcy. Bankruptcy exemptions are properties may not be seized during bankruptcy. You can determine exactly which of your possessions are at risk by consulting this list before you file. You may find yourself unpleasantly surprised when the things you value the most are taken from you without warning. This is why it is very important the familiarize yourself with this list.

Always be completely truthful when you disclose your personal information during a bankruptcy. If you hide something, or neglect to add all of your information you could be denied. Make sure all assets and income sources are accounted for when you file your petition. This will be a show of good faith to the court and can help them to properly rule in your proceeding.

You might experience trouble with getting unsecured credit after filing for bankruptcy. If you do, then try applying for a coupe of secured cards. Using a secured card not only helps to rebuild your credit, but it also keeps you from going more in debt with credit card bills. After a while, you may be able to get unsecured credit again.

You can stop unwanted calls from creditors in debt collectors by filing for personal bankruptcy. Being unable to support yourself and pay your bills is never a good feeling. Consider bankruptcy so that you can start off new and worry about your future rather than the past.

You see, you don?t have to give in to bankruptcy. Use the tips you just read to make the best decision possible. Use the information you have learned here, and see how you can revamp your finances and protect your valuable credit history.

Gain Control Of Your Acne With These Tips

It is common for people to want clear skin, without acne. Healthy skin can dramatically improve your appearance and your attitude. Acne is not only an affliction for teenagers; it can affect people of all ages. Developing a highly effective skin care routine is the first step in achieving clear, healthy skin. This article will show you a number of acne-fighting tips.

Did you ever think that talking on a cell phone could cause an acne breakout? The oil from your face and hair is picked up by cell phones and transmitted back to them. To minimize the accumulation of these oils, use a cotton ball dipped in alcohol to clean the phone. Do not let your phone touch your face.

Try avoiding makeup for awhile and see if that has any affect on your acne. Applying makeup to conceal your acne is tempting, but should be avoided because this may actually clog your pores. The more you can avoid wearing makeup, the better your skin will be, and the faster your acne will be able to clear up.

Caffeine can have negative effects on your skin, causing more acne. Simply reducing the amount of caffeine you ingest can have a significant effect on your acne.

Drink plenty of water to keep your skin hydrated, and reduce acne. It is important to drink enough water on a daily basis. People should consume 6-8 glasses of water everyday. Dry skin can clog up pores and lead to acne.

It?s important to drink sufficient water throughout the day to help keep your skin clear. At least eight glasses a day is the standard recommendation. Your body starts to dehydrate when you do not have sufficient water. When you are dehydrated, your skin cannot shed the dead cells in order to make way for the fresher layers of skin. This lack of shedding can cause acne to worsen. Dead skin cells that do not properly shed as a result of dehydration can exacerbate acne.

Age is not a factor in determining who has acne. For flawless, unblemished skin, it is necessary to have an effective skin care plan in place.

The Most Exciting Moment of My Scientific Career

HIV,AIDS, AfricaThumbi Ndung?u left Kenya 1995 to study medicine at Harvard. He later returned to Africa on a mission to exploit HIV?s vulnerabilities. Now the head of the HIV Pathogenesis Program at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa, Ndung?u spoke with Scientific American contributor Brendan Borrell about a research breakthrough early in his career that helped set the pace for the Kenyan?s ongoing study of genes in the immune system that may help to fight AIDS and lead to a vaccine. When asked which moment has been the most exciting of his young career, Ndung?u responded:

?The most exciting moment for me was when I succeeded in developing the first molecular clone of HIV subtype C as a graduate student at Harvard in the late 1990s. HIV subtype C is the most common subtype in the world. About 50 percent of all infections are caused by subtype C, but developing an infectious clone was difficult for reasons that we don?t fully understand.

?An infectious clone is when you take a virus and put it in a bacterial plasmid [a circular strand of DNA] so that you can grow it over and over again. The example that I like to use is that it?s almost like a cassette recording of the entire genetic information of the virus. Every time you need to use the virus in a well-controlled experiment in the laboratory, you can then get that infectious molecular clone and put it in a cell to make copies of it.

?I?d been trying for three years to make a clone, and was getting very frustrated. There were many other groups around the world that had also been trying and had not been successful. Once we had what we thought was a clone, we ran a series of experiments to make sure we had the full length of the HIV inserted. Then we put it into cells and waited for several days before testing whether we were getting active virus production. We were.

?It?s hard to say what we did that was different from other groups, but I probably just kept trying until something worked. It also took a bit of luck.?

Japanese games cannot ignore multiplayer- Bleszinski ...

Epic Games? Cliff Bleszinski, creator of Gears of War, says Japanese games shouldn?t be ignoring multiplayer, citing games like Vanquish as an example for how lacking multiplayer can hurt their sales and reception.

?My advice to Japan is that in a disc-based market right now, you cannot [ignore multiplayer],? he said while speaking with?Gamasutra.

However, he doesn?t think they should go ahead and put a multiplayer component game into every game, even if it doesn?t fit. ?I?m not saying tack multiplayer onto every game,? he said.

He then went on to cite examples. He said about Grasshopper?s Shadows of the Damned- ?It was a beautifully crazy game with really fun gameplay, but no multiplayer co-op experience in there.

I?m not saying tack on versus; there?s a billion different ways you can do some sort of ?players interacting with other players.??

?And if you?re going to make a third-person shooter? the fact that Vanquish didn?t have a multiplayer suite was a crime,? he said about Vanquish. ?That IP, it was pretty good as far as being Western, but the gameplay was great, the vibe? and I?ve often said on record that if Gears is the kind of Wild, Wild West coal train chugging along, that Vanquish is the Japanese bullet train, with style and everything.

?And there is absolutely no reason I shouldn?t have been zipping around, doing the mega slides, diving up in the air in an arena with other players.?

He then talked about how From Software innovatively implemented multiplayer in Dark Souls, saying that it might ?inspire a lot of Western developers to figure ways that you can have connected elements in campaign games, and have more of a blended experience.?

NTT DoCoMo expands its instant translator trials to 10 languages and 10,000 users

NTT DoCoMo's high-speed over-the-phone translation service has hit its second wider trial, aiming to test its skills with 10 languages and 10,000 subscribers -- up from 1,000 during its initial tests in 2011. DoCoMo has thrown in a few more details on how its real-time translator working. The feature is split into three steps: first, the carrier's servers recognize what you're saying, parses it into another language through its own cloud services and then converts the final translation into an audio message. The service currently functions with any Android device running version 2.2 or higher and a separate app will handle the interpretation for French, German, Indonesian, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish and Thai. The Japanese carrier aims to launch a commercial version by March 2013 -- just in time for that vacation to see those falling cherry blossoms.

The Importance Of Social Media In Elections: Mostly Hot Air

5991208465_3d471e6689_bIf social media mattered in elections, Ron Paul would have a realistic shot at being the Republican nominee and Barack Obama would be on track to crush Mitt Romney in the biggest landslide in American history. Despite the hype over follower counts, a new study shows that there's no credible evidence that Twitter can be used to predict how elections will turn out. "It can be concluded that the predictive power of Twitter regarding elections has been greatly exaggerated," writes computer science professor, Daniel Gayo-Avello, in an unusually strident rant (for an academic). Gayo's conclusions are intuitive: social media users are an unrepresentative slice of voters, and tweets may not accurately reflect how voters behave.

Panasonic sends 100,000 LEDs down Tokyo river, mates tech with tradition

Panasonic sends 100,000 LEDs down Tokyo river, mates tech with tradition

If you'd been by the shore of the Sumida River in central Tokyo this past weekend, you would have noticed that it was glowing a distinct shade of blue. That's because Panasonic decided to kick off the first-ever Tokyo Hotaru (fireflies) festival by sending 100,000 EVERLED light bulbs down the river, both to mimic fireflies as well as to pay homage to a Japanese tradition of floating candles on the water. Before you cringe too much at the thought of the environmental impact, rest assured that Panasonic minimized the footprint of its aquatic LED parade. All the bulbs ran on solar power (presumably, charged during the day) that kept Evolta batteries fed inside, and the entire lot was scooped up in a large net afterwards. We love the exhibition as a large-scale demo of sustainable lighting -- you may just want to avoid fishing along the Sumida's shoreline for awhile in case you catch a straggler.
