Surveys shows China manufacturing slowing further

China's manufacturing slowed in December for a second month due to weak global demand amid U.S. and European economic woes, a survey released Friday showed.

The latest HSBC Purchasing Managers Index added to growing signs of strain on China's manufacturers and exporters. They have been battered by a plunge in global demand and lending curbs that have driven thousands of entrepreneurs into bankruptcy, wiping out jobs and raising the specter of unrest.

The index for December stood at 48.7 on a 100-point scale on which numbers below 50 indicate a contraction in activity. It said companies reported a drop in foreign orders due to sluggish global demand.

"Weakening external demand is starting to bite," said HSBC economist Hongbin Qu in a statement with the survey.

The latest data will add to pressure on Beijing to ease spending and lending controls to stabilize growth and spur job creation, Qu said.

"Hard landings should be avoided so long as easing measures filter through in the coming months," he said.

China's export growth declined in November for a third month, falling to 13.8 percent from the 15.9 percent the previous month.

The slump in global demand has battered export-driven southern coastal regions, where thousands of small companies have been driven out of business and the survivors have laid off tens of thousands of workers.

Smaller private companies were hard hit by bank lending curbs imposed to cool inflation and a boom in housing prices. The government has promised to have state banks lend more to help struggling entrepreneurs but says most of its curbs will remain in place.

Where Will 'AHS' Go In Season Two? (omg!)

Where Will 'AHS' Go In Season Two?

During a conference call following last week's American Horror Story finale, co-creator Ryan Murphy revealed that every season would follow a new family in a new house.

He went on to reveal, "There is a clue in the last three episodes where we say what the second season will be."

Today Ryan took that one step further, telling EW.com that the clue is located in the penultimate episode, Birth. "Go through it frame by frame. I planted it in there," he teased before adding, "I will never reveal it."

So I did just that. Went through the episode frame by frame and here are the Top 5 clues from Birth that might hint at the season two location.

Possible Location #1: Vermont
The episode opens in 1984 with Newhart playing on the television in the background. The show, which ran from 1982 to 1990, took place at an inn ... rife for the haunting?

Possible Location #2: Florida
This has been a popular theory with fans. The location was repeatedly mentioned throughout the season since it's where Vivien's sister Jill lives. Plus, there is no shortage of dead people in the retirement capital of America.

Possible Location #3: A Geographically Irrelevant Prison
Psychic Billie Dean Howard (played by the divine Sarah Paulson) has a long soliloquy about paramagnetic grip -- how evil can be absorbed by an environment. She says, "You see it all the time in places like prisons or asylums. Negative energy feeds on trauma and pain. It draws those things to it." This echoes a sentiment Ryan expressed during the conference call: "There are all different kinds of horror stores to tell, be it serial killing stories or true crime stories or prison stories."

Possible Location #4: North Carolina circa 1590
In an attempt to help Violet expunge Chad from the house, Billie Dean tells her a story about a Ghost Colony that lived in Roanoke around the turn of the century.

Possible Location #5: London, England
In the episode, two doctors treat Vivien: Dr. Marchesi and the unseen Dr. Hall. Well, Marchesi Hall is located in St. Paul's Cathedral in London.

Premier League Midseason Analysis: London vs. Manchester

london manchester Premier League Midseason Analysis: London vs. Manchester

It isn?t exactly halfway through the season, but all of the clubs are 18 games into their 2011-12 campaign except for Everton and Tottenham (both are 17 games in) who have to make up their first round fixture due to the London Riots. One of the things I like to follow throughout the Premier League season is the unspoken (or lightly spoken) regional battle between the Premier League clubs of Greater Manchester and Greater London. With all due respect to the Midlands region and the country of Wales, the most polarizing clubs of the Premier League, save Liverpool, call one of these two regions home. I will share the numbers and dissect the region?s clubs and compare them. At the end, I will share my opinion of which side is winning the battle so far.

This battle is only being analyzed from the Premiership?s perspective not the from the perspective of European football. However, I will mention that in my opinion, London has already won that particular battle considering that both of the London?s representatives (Chelsea and Arsenal) have moved to the knockout rounds. Both of Manchester?s representatives (City and United) have been eliminated in the group stage. So let?s begin by introducing the two sides? representatives in the Premiership. I will list their overall records and records against the clubs in Manchester. I was thinking about adding Blackburn to even out the two regional sides at five, though I know Blackburn is close to Greater Manchester but not in it. However, Blackburn doesn?t have much to offer so I elected against it.

London:

Club (overall record; won/drawn/lost) (record vs. Manchester)

  • Arsenal (10/3/5) (2/0/2)
  • Chelsea (10/4/4) (2/1/1)
  • Tottenham Hotspur (12/2/3) (1/0/3)
  • Fulham (4/7/7) (2/1/1)
  • Queens Park Rangers (4/5/9) (0/0/4)

Manchester:

Club (overall record; on/drawn/lost) (record vs. London)

  • Manchester City (14/3/1) (3/1/1)
  • Manchester United (14/3/1) (5/0/0)
  • Bolton Wanderers (4/0/14) (1/0/4)
  • Wigan Athletic (3/5/10) (1/1/3)

London has achieved 23 points against Manchester sides and Manchester has achieved 32 points against clubs from London. From looking at the records for Manchester, this is clear who is carrying the banner for Manchester. The teams from London are all solid and all of them can not only stay in the Premiership but finish in the top half. Arsenal, Chelsea and Spurs are vying for the Champions League spots and I think still have a say in who will be the Champions this year.

I will briefly expound on each club and give my say to where they will end up.

London:

Arsenal:?

I am an Arsenal supporter and I was back in my usual pessimistic disposition at the beginning of the season when they were floundering.? However, I really think Arsene Wenger?s? desperation signings especially Mikel Arteta have brought an experienced man in the center of the pitch similar to what Scott Parker has brought to Tottenham. He?s not Cesc Fabregas nor did most of the Arsenal faithful (well the sane portion) expect him to directly fill the role. He distributes the ball efficiently and effectively in essence letting Arsenal still play their style but he won?t really get on the end of things. I?m not going to say that he isn?t brilliant because in my opinion he is. However, brilliance isn?t always in the form of Messi, Ronaldo, Totti and Rooney. Mertesacker is a big man who can control the air and can be a solid defender to partner with the rock known as the ?Verminator? (Thomas Vermaelen). The last thing but certainly not the least which has giving the Gunners new life. RVP. What can I say about him? 16 goals in 18 games. Nothing more needs to be said really. I predict that Arsenal will finish 3rd?due to Tottenham?s eventual period of tapering off. I think Chelsea will have plenty more peaks and valleys due to the conundrum that is Fernando Torres.

Chelsea:

Andre Villas-Boas has had to downplay the whole ?Second Coming of Mourinho? for a little while but I think his biggest issue is how can he get Fernando Torres to kick into Liverpool form. They are still a bit erratic in my view but the one very bright light for Chelsea is Daniel Sturridge. If he can continue his form and Lampard doesn?t fade off his good run of form as well. They can achieve a firm hold of 4th?because I think AVB may have found a offensive solution for this team.

Tottenham Hotspur:

As an Arsenal supporter, it may be quite fitting for me to go on a scathing verbal attack on a sorry excuse for a Premiership club called Tottenham Hotspur. However, I must commend Harry Redknapp despite his vice grip hold on Luka Modric. I also believe Spurs made the most important signing in the League this August by signing Scott Parker. He has been immense for them and I think he really lets Modric and Van der Vaart shine without worry considering Parker will hold the midfield for you. Another important signing was Brad Friedel. The American is an improvement over the erratic, mistake-prone Gomes. Tottenham has always been a team who would have these great runs of form then they drop into a rut usually towards the end of the season. While I don?t think they will drop into that ditch. They will drop a few points and that will give Chelsea and Arsenal the opportunity to pounce. I predict a 5th?place finish for them.

Fulham:

Fulham doesn?t have much to offer. They do enough to maintain to middle of the pack finish and stay in the League. I do think they were on an upswing with Mark Hughes who I thought really could have made something more out of them. I do not think Martin Jol is the right man for the job but he?s there. I do think Fulham can make a top half finish if Jol finds away to incorporate Zamora and get him on form. Another key man is Clint Dempsey. He is one of the most underrated players in the Premier League and Arsenal did inquire about him but Fulham?s price was too high. Dempsey who is Fulham?s all time leading scorer in the Premier League already has 6 goals to his name and I think he can achieve a 15 goal season and secure Fulham a spot in the top half. I predict 7th?place for them.

QPR:

I think that they have the pieces to achieve a respectable finish as well. I do think that they need to bolster the defense in this January window. They bolstered the offensive side of things yet they still are below average in scoring. I do wonder if Neil Warnock is the answer for them. I think he deserved to manage the side in the Premier League considering he got them there but I do think that if they continue their less than ideal form. Will Warnock stay with the club let alone avoid relegation? I predict that they will stay up and finish the bottom half around 13th.

Manchester:

Manchester City:

Sir Alex?s ?noisy neighbors? are making plenty of noise this year especially at Old Trafford (that was a joy to watch). They score goals and concede very little. Their squad depth is quite deep with a rainbow of personalities. It?s amazing what a blank check can do for you. Silva and Yaya Toure are outstanding. Dzeko is on a good run of form. Kompany really commands the back line and Hart is as consistent as they come in goal. Mario Balotelli, why always you? I don?t know. They truly are a team, I enjoy watching. I predict the Premier League trophy to be raised by Vincent Kompany as Manchester City win the League and the city of Manchester is finally its rightful color according to my City supporting friends. That color is Blue.

Manchester United:

Sir Alex?s side has experienced total jubilation and total dejection. The Red Devils have been excellent this season save for a couple matches. They will give City a very stiff challenge in not only the league but in the FA Cup as well. It will be fun to observe the Manchester Derby in the Etihad Stadium. I predict Man U to place 2nd?and to give themselves a chance to redeem themselves in the Champions League next season.

Bolton Wanderers:

A team who I believed was doomed from the start and they were lucky to avoid relegation last season. I do think that they were unlucky to have lost Stuart Holden again? who I thought could have definitely help save the season for them. Ivan Klasnic and Chris Eagles have come good for them on the offensive end but their defense is atrocious. They have so far conceded the most goals in the Premiership with 41. I don?t see Coyle?s style of play while mildly attractive going anywhere for them. I predict that they will be relegated by finishing in their current spot of 19th?and Coyle gets sacked.

Wigan Athletic:?

The ?Latics are a tough one to predict because I?ve been predicting them to end their one and only top flight spell for the last couple of years. I have obviously been wrong. They do have a magician at the touchline in Roberto Martinez though his job to stay in the? Premiership has been made quite harder due to the departure of Charles N?Zogbia. They still have a young side who can be quite vibrant in their play. I like James McCarthy, Antolin Alcaraz, Franco Di Santo, Jordi Gomez a lot. You have a decent keeper in Al-Habsi with other serviceable players like Conor Sammon and Gary Caldwell. Hugo Rodallega is a very good player who is one of the few reasons Wigan have lasted as long as they have. I predict Wigan to stay up for one more year and finish in 17th.

Conclusion:

While Manchester are fighting at the top and bottom of the table. I think London right now has an advantage and the teams are better collectively. In my opinion, London is winning this battle this year. I don?t put much stock into regional rivalries but it?s something interesting to think about. If I had to choose which regional team I barrack for

it would definitely be Team London. Who do you support? London, Manchester, the Midlands, even perhaps Wales (I haven?t forgotten about Swansea).? Do you think it even matters? All feedback to my questions or to the article itself is appreciated.

Sony and Samsung finalize split on joint LCD venture

We reported in November that Sony was looking to sell off its stake in a joint S-LCD venture they undertook with Samsung, and now it appears the two companies have finalized the terms of the deal. Sony announced that they will be paid $939 million in cash by Samsung, making S-LCD Corp will a wholly-owned subsidiary of Samsung.

While much of S-LCD?s manufacturing output went into flat panel TVs, some of it was also dedicated to making LCD screens for smartphones. The deal includes a strategic agreement governing Sony?s continued ability to purchase LCD panels from Samsung?s S-LCD subsidiary, with the intended goal of ?enhancing the competitiveness of both companies?.

Sony most likely gets first crack at a certain amount of the output of S-LCD, while Samsung gets greater flexibility in managing output and other manufacturing choices. Sony and Samsung reserved the right to continue to collaborate on the engineering behind LCD production, so Samsung will still have access to some of Sony?s research prowess.

What does this mean to consumers? With luck it means smartphone screen prices will come down in price, although AMOLED screens continue to assault LCD screen market share on high end devices. It may positively impact Sony?s TV division (which has lost money for years), but additionally may be part of the overhaul of Sony?s smartphone realignment. Many medium and long-term changes can be expected now that Ericsson sold its portion of the Sony-Ericsson phone manufacturer to Sony.

Kim Jong-un takes charge of the military and Workers' Party

PYONGYANG // Kim Jong-il's son was identified yesterday as the head of a top decision-making body of the ruling Workers' Party, a post that now gives him authority over political as well as military matters in North Korea.

A week after state media reported Kim's December 17 death, the campaign to install successor Kim Jong-un was gaining momentum.

On Saturday, state media referred to him as "supreme leader" of North Korea's 1.2 million-strong armed forces and said the military's top leaders had pledged their loyalty to him.

Yesterday, the Rodong Sinmun newspaper described him as head of the Central Committee of the Workers' Party - a post that appears to make him the top official in the Workers' Party.

Kim Jong-il ruled North Korea as head of three main state organs: the Workers' Party, the Korean People's Army and the National Defence Commission.

His father, the North Korea founder Kim Il-sung, meanwhile, remains the nation's "eternal president" long after his 1994 death.

Kim Jong-un, who is in his late 20s and was revealed last year as his father's choice among three sons for successor, is the third generation Kim to rule the country.

He was named a vice chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party, but was expected to ascend to new military and political posts while being groomed to become the next leader.

People continued lining up yesterday in central Kim Il-sung Square, where a massive portrait that usually features Kim Il-sung has been replaced by one of Kim Jong-il, to bow before his smiling image and to lay funereal flowers.

Heated buses stood by to give mourners a respite from the cold, and hot tea and water were distributed from kiosks.

South Koreans were among the mourners. The widow of former President Kim Dae-jung, who held a landmark summit with Kim Jong-il in 2000, and the Hyundai Group chairwoman, Hyun Jeong-eun, whose late husband had ties to the North, each led delegations that drove across the heavily fortified border to Pyongyang.

Sudanese army kills leader of Darfur rebel group (AP)

KHARTOUM, Sudan ? Sudanese troops killed Khalil Ibrahim, the leader of the main Darfur rebel group, in fighting early Sunday west of the capital Khartoum, the military said.

Ibrahim led the Darfur-based Justice and Equality Movement, or JEM, which unlike other Darfur rebel groups did not join a peace deal with the government in Khartoum.

An army statement, carried by the official SUNA news agency, said Ibrahim was killed in the North Kordufan state, at Wad Banda, an area 440 miles (700 kilometers) west of Khartoum. Ibrahim's group, JEM, could not immediately be reached for comment.

Fighting in the area flared up in the past days. On Saturday, the Sudanese army said the rebels from Darfur attacked three locations in neighboring North Kordufan, killing an unspecified number of civilians in an area where government forces were not present. JEM did not claim responsibility for Saturday's attack, but in 2008, it was behind a large-scale attack on the capital.

The military responded on Sunday, killing Ibrahim with a group of associates as the rebels where retreating toward South Sudan, which in July seceded from Sudan and became the world's youngest country.

Ibrahim was believed to have been until recently in Libya, where he enjoyed support of Moammar Gadhafi until the death of the Libyan dictator at the hands of the country's revolutionaries.

"The army cut all paths for the group as it was retreating and trying to cross into South Sudan to reorganize it forces," said Sudanese army spokesman Col. Khalid al-Sawarmy Saad. "Our gallant armed forces were able to kill rebel Khalil Ibrahim along with some of his associates."

"The armed forces laid a long chase and were able to impose an effective and complete siege against the remnants of Khalil Ibrahim's forces," said the military spokesman.

He commended the residents of Wad Banda who he said "gave the ultimate example of patriotism" in the face of "bad treatment they received from the rebel forces. "

Ibrahim's death is likely to be a significant blow to JEM. Darfur has been in turmoil since 2003, when ethnic African rebels accusing the Arab-dominated Sudanese government of discrimination took up arms against it.

The Khartoum government is accused of retaliating by unleashing Arab militias on civilians ? a charge the government denies. The U.N. estimates 300,000 people have died and 2.7 million have been displaced in the conflict.

Ismail el-Haj Musa, Sudanese deputy speaker of the council of states, told the pan-Arab Al Jazeera TV that Ibrahim re-entered Sudan sometime after Gadhafi's death and was en route south.

"He completely refused to come to the negotiating table, he never joined the peace talks," Musa said. "He committed acts against the state."

Drinks and joy as defectors embrace Kim's death (AP)

SEOUL, South Korea ? More than 21,000 North Koreans now live in South Korea. For many, the news of North Korean leader Kim Jong Il's death stirred mixed emotions.

Several interviewed in Seoul by The Associated Press described a burst of joy upon hearing that Kim had died, but also a surge of unease over the fate of relatives and friends and even a shadow of homesickness.

There was celebration ? one man had drinks with a friend_ and hope for a better future for their homeland. For one woman, there was sadness as she envisioned little girls cramming to memorize the Kims' feats.

South Korea is no paradise for the defectors either; facing prejudice and lacking job skills, they rarely feel welcomed by their capitalist brethren.

Here, in their own words, are what three of them had to say:

___

THE PAINTER

"I felt rather calm after hearing of Kim Jong Il's death," said Song Byeok, 42, a painter who learned his art drawing propaganda posters in North Korea. "I thought to myself about him: 'You, too, are human in the end.'

"It was his destiny. He couldn't avoid it. ... He was praised like a god, but in the end, he was only a human who fell like an autumn leaf."

Desperate for food in 2000, Song and his father tried to cross the river into China ? not to defect but just to get something to eat from relatives on the Chinese side.

He still believed Kim Jong Il was a good leader.

However, when his father was swept away by the current and drowned, border guards ignored Song's pleas to help rescue him; instead they beat Song up and detained him. The experience convinced him to leave for good in 2002.

"I thought to myself after hearing Kim died that a wind of democratization may finally blow in North Korea," he said. "Reforms may come because Kim Jong Il has died.

"Kim Jong Un is young and he may lean toward reforms. But I still think he may not last long because he's too inexperienced. He only had a year or so to be groomed as successor.

"It may have been better for him if Kim Jong Il had lasted longer."

Song Byeok is the name he paints under and is widely known by in South Korea; he refused to divulge his real name for fear of retaliation against relatives and friends still in North Korea.

___

THE STUDENT

"I believed North Korea was the best country in the world," said Lee Hyeon-seo, who was 13 when late President Kim Il Sung, father of Kim Jong Il, died in 1994.

"I really believed in the theory of self-reliance," she said.

"When Kim Il Sung died, I saw many foreign guests crying on TV, which made me feel like Kim Il Sung was a god," she said. "But as days passed, I felt I wasn't as sad as I was supposed to when I stood in front of his statue.

"Everybody was crying but I couldn't cry, so I dabbed my face with my spit. It was a hot day, and some girl fainted and was sent to a hospital."

Lee, now 30, fled the North in the mid-1990s and lived for a decade in China before moving to South Korea in 2008. Now she studies Chinese at the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies in Seoul.

"I remember the propaganda education vividly even though I was a girl," she said. "In North Korea, excelling at math or English is less important than being good at the history of Kim Il Sung's revolutionary steps. Now I know it's fake, but we had to cram as much of the history in our heads as possible. We struggled to get high marks on the subject in school.

"I used to believe unification was a pipe dream. But now it may be possible. I'm hearing from friends that they'd like to be invited to my house in North Korea if the Koreas are reunified."

___

THE ACTIVIST

"I know a person's death is usually something that shouldn't be celebrated, but this time it was completely different," said Kim Seung-cheol, 50.

"Kim's death meant that North Korea would start changing," he said. "It was a hopeful sign for a change."

Kim went out with a friend to celebrate over sausages and "soju," a popular Korean liquor. They laughed with joy.

When he defected 20 years ago, he left behind his wife and son.

"If unification happens, I would like to find out if my son is still alive," he said. "If I find him, I will ask him to hit me for leaving him.

"And if I'm reunited with my wife, I will sing a song out of joy. But I have to ask forgiveness of her, because I've married another woman here in South Korea.

"I've pretty much given up on trying to find my son. It's important he be alive though," he said. "I only hope he is not living a miserable life as a vagabond.

"I hope South Korea can start engaging North Korea. A conciliatory gesture may be needed to open up North Korea. Seoul should send a message to Pyongyang that South Korea wants to go together with the new leadership in North Korea."

(AP) ? It's an opening salvo of the presidential campaign, minus actual presidential nominees.

Vice President Joe Biden unleashed a biting critique of Mitt Romney's policies Friday and the Republican came swiftly back at him ? a full-contact preview of what the general election might look like should Romney win the GOP nomination to challenge President Barack Obama.

All this, before a vote is cast in the Republican race, The Iowa caucuses, looming Jan. 3, are the first step in the voting to pick a Republican nominee.

In an opinion piece published in The Des Moines Register, Biden portrayed the Republican frontrunner as the purveyor of failed, retreaded economic ideas. Romney shot back that Biden and Obama live an economic "fantasyland" out of touch with the real world.

Biden's jabs mark a major escalation in Obama's re-election campaign and refocus his political team on Romney, the former Massachusetts governor whom Obama advisers have long considered his most likely opponent. And it switches Obama away from his just-concluded tax cut victory over House Republicans to the GOP presidential field just 12 days before the Iowa caucuses.

"Romney appears satisfied to settle for an economy in which fewer people succeed, while the majority of Americans are left to tread water or fall behind," Biden wrote.

The Obama team may be betting on Romney, but his Republican rivals were conceding no such ground.

Campaigning in South Carolina, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich derided Romney as a "Massachusetts moderate trying to come down and pretend to be a conservative. But I'm not going to say anything stronger than that. I'm going to focus on positive things."

Asked later how that wasn't being negative, Gingrich said: "I didn't criticize him. I described him accurately."

And he swiped at rival Ron Paul for wanting to shut overseas military bases, a stark departure from the Republican mainstream and one not bound to sit well in pro-military South Carolina. "The only person I know who is for a weaker military than Barack Obama is Ron Paul," Gingrich told 300 people outside a Columbia restaurant. "If we become isolationist, the world would become a more dangerous place overnight."

Rep. Michele Bachmann's campaign said Friday she would start radio and TV commercials in Iowa, her first since her straw poll victory in the state in August. In them, she stresses her Christian values and that she's "an Iowa girl from Waterloo."

Biden's words, meanwhile, summed up a running story line about Romney that Obama's campaign and the Democratic Party have been refining for months. The piece also was a direct rebuttal to Romney's recent claim he wants "an opportunity society" versus what he called Obama's "entitlement society."

Biden reiterated a major theme of Obama's re-election effort, one the president spelled out in a recent speech in Kansas where he declared that the middle class was at a make-or-break moment. In taking on Romney, Biden defined "opportunity" in his own terms.

"We believe deeply in opportunity ? that if you work hard and play by the rules, no opportunity should be out of reach," he wrote. "This is a fundamentally different vision than what the other side has proposed."

Romney, speaking at the Tilt'n Diner, quickly countered that it was Obama who is hurting the country and expressed astonishment that Biden would have the "chutzpah ... the delusion" to write such a piece.

"This president and his policies have made it harder on the American people and on the middle class," he said. "And I don't think they get it. I don't think they understand from fantasyland what's happening in real America. They need to get out to diners like this."

The timing, placement and direct response to Romney represented a remarkable early volley from the Obama camp, using the most potent voice next to the president himself to set a new signpost on the re-election season. And it signaled an aggressive strategy to challenge his GOP opposition and engage even though the Republican nomination could remain unsettled for months.

In the opinion piece, Biden said Romney's proposals for the economy "would actually double down on the policies that caused the greatest economic calamity since the Great Depression and accelerated a decades-long assault on the middle class."

"Romney also misleadingly suggests that the president and I are creating an 'Entitlement Society,' whereby government provides everything for its people without regard to merit, as opposed to what he calls an Opportunity Society,' where everything is merit-based and every man is left to fend for himself," Biden wrote.

In essentially placing its bets on Romney, the Obama camp elevated his stature in the race, particularly in Iowa where he is running neck-and-neck with Gingrich and Texas congressman Ron Paul.

Romney was clearly ready ? and eager ? to engage with the White House. While he generally has to be asked, or even pressed, to criticize Gingrich, he hit back at Biden at the first opportunity.

"I think they realize what's coming," he said. "I hope they're right. I hope I'm the nominee."

Romney aides said campaign days like this help him against his GOP rivals, positioning him as the candidate best able to take on Obama in the fall and addressing a top Republican goal: selecting a nominee who is electable against the president.

The Obama campaign also chose Iowa to deliver the Biden message because it is an epicenter of national politics and where it was sure to get intense attention.

Moreover, Iowa is a general election swing state that Democrat Al Gore won in 2000 but President George W. Bush won in 2004. Obama beat Republican John McCain in the state in 2008 by 8 percentage points. Biden's message clearly aimed for the state's general election voters as well.

Earlier this week, Romney accused Obama of deepening the economic crisis and backing policies that would redistribute wealth instead of creating equal opportunity for people to do well.

Romney said his policies would turn the U.S. into an "opportunity society" while Obama's vision for an "entitlement society" would make more people dependent on government welfare.

"The only entitlement we believe in is an America where if you work hard, you can get ahead," Biden wrote in the op-ed.

Biden's piece hinted at another line of attack on Romney ? that the former governor is a man of wealth and privilege. Biden, in his piece, stressed his own family's working class roots and how his father's pride was "put to the test when he found himself struggling to make ends meet."

Romney, by contrast, is the son of former American Motors Corp. chairman and Michigan Gov. George Romney. Romney also made his own fortune as a venture capitalist, a point Obama's Democratic surrogates have used to portray Romney as out of touch and elitist.

Man Turns Himself In As Cancer Donation Jar Thief

A suburban Chicago man turned himself in Thursday after surveillance video showing him snatch a donation jar intended to benefit a local woman battling cancer went public.

Joseph Campione, 44, of Palos Heights, was charged with felony theft after surrendering himself at the Crestwood, Ill. police station, the Chicago Tribune reports.

Just before Dec. 5 on Dec. 5, Campione allegedly entered a Shop Mart convenience store at 13650 Cicero Ave. In the surveillance video released by police, the man can be seen making a purchase and, when the store clerk turns away from the counter, grabbing the donation jar and leaving the store immediately.

The jar contained money donated to help Kelly Stawicki, a 28-year-old Alsip, Ill. woman with stage 3 colon cancer, pay her medical bills. Stawicki is uninsured and has racked up tens of thousands of dollars worth of bills as she undergoes treatments.

CBS Chicago reports that an anonymous donor stepped forward when the story went public and donated $10,000 to Stawicki to help with her mounting medical expenses.

According to CBS, Campione has a criminal record dating back to 1993, including a retail theft conviction in 1994 and other charges of obstructing justice, deceptive practice and theft which were all ultimately dropped.

Honesty Study: Texting makes it easier for people to lie (Yahoo! News)

Study reveals that deceit happens with lack of face-to-face contact

If you want to get the unvarnished truth from someone, don't even entertain the thought of?texting them. A new study by researchers from the?University of British Columbia confirms what you may have suspected all along ? people find it easier to?lie through text messaging.

The 170 students in the study played out a pseudo-stock market scenario with real cash incentives to boost their involvement. Half of the students were designated brokers, while the other half were given the role of buyers. The brokers were privy to classified information that affected the cash reward the buyers received ? and not telling the buyers what they know could lead to the increase of their own compensation.

Four modes of communication were used to make the business deals: personal meet-up, video chat, audio chat, and text messaging. After each transaction between a broker and a buyer, the latter would be informed of the same information the broker knew from the start. The researchers then asked them to report if the broker deceived them in order to make a sale.

The result? Nearly no deception was reported for video?chat transactions, while those who made deals through text messaging were 31% more prone to report deception than if they met in person, and 18% more than if they talked through an audio chat. That's because brokers who did video chat transactions were acutely aware of being scrutinized, suppressing their urge to lie.

Professor Karl Aquino of the universty says, "Our results confirm that the more anonymous the technology allows a person to be in a communications exchange, the more likely they are to become morally lax."?So next time you have to deal with someone, don't make it easy for them to deceive you?? arrange meetings where you can look them in the eye. In the case of?buying from online sellers on Ebay or other websites, the researchers suggest asking them to chat with you over?Skype so you'd get the most unembellished details possible.

Some Russian protesters want revolution: Kremlin aide (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? The Kremlin's chief political strategist condemned Russian protesters on Friday, saying they wanted to turn demonstrations over a disputed election into a revolution like those that toppled leaders in the Arab world.

"There are those who want to turn the protests into a color revolution - that is for sure," the president's first deputy chief of staff, Vladislav Surkov, said in an interview with the Izvestia newspaper.

Tens of thousands of people have said they will protest on Saturday in Moscow as part of the biggest wave of opposition rallies since Prime Minister Vladimir Putin rose to power 12 years ago.

Surkov said the protesters were acting as though they were taking cues from the works of U.S. academic Gene Sharp, whose books on revolution have been cited as a major influence on activists who led the campaign against Egypt's Hosni Mubarak.

Opposition leaders are calling for a new vote after accusations that the December 4 election, which gave Putin's ruling party a slim majority in the State Duma lower house of parliament, was riddled with voting violations.

In the short interview, Surkov echoed opinions from Putin that some protesters were being instructed from abroad and that those attending were carefully following a preformulated script.

"(Protesters) are acting by the book, following ... new revolutionary methods," said Surkov, referring to those who want to spark a revolution as 'crooks', a word often used by protesters to describe Putin's United Russia party.

As in demonstrations in North Africa and the Middle East, the Russian protesters have relied on social media and Internet sites to organize their rallies and boost their numbers.

"For as much as it's by the book, it's boring. You want to tell these gentlemen to distance themselves from the instructions, from fantasies," he said.

DEFUSE DISCONTENT

Surkov, who is a contentious figure for the opposition, said the Russian leadership had already started loosening its political control.

"(Changes) have already happened. The system has already changed ... We just have to put these changes into law," he said, one day after President Dmitry Medvedev outlined proposals for overhauling the political system such as allowing regional governors to be elected rather than appointed by the Kremlin.

Surkov, who had been working as acting Kremlin chief of staff, was passed over for the permanent position on Thursday when Putin ally Sergei Ivanov was chosen for the job.

The move may be a sign that Putin is trying to distance himself from the figure who has drawn criticism from protesters.

The Kremlin is keen to defuse discontent before the protests planned across Russia on Saturday, following an earlier day of protests by tens of thousands of people on December 10.

Following Medvedev's proposals to simplify the electoral system, a statement on the Kremlin website said legislation had been sent to parliament to enact them.

They include moves to reduce the number of signatures needed for a party to propose a presidential candidate and measures to simplify the process for political parties to compete in elections. The changes are to go into effect in January 1, 2013.

Surkov said the protests could bring "turbulence" to Russia, whose leaders cherish the stability they say Putin brought to the country after coming to power after the chaos that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991.

"The future is not a calm place, but it's not worth it to be afraid," Surkov said. "Turbulence, even strong turbulence is not a catastrophe, it is an (expression of) different kinds of stability."

What A Good (If Slightly Weird) Boy Wants For Christmas

Homer Simpson knows the problem. What do you give to someone who lives abnormally? Outside ordinary categories?

Well, English muffins are always welcome, but since we're about to hit the weekend (and I'm permitted to play) I've come up with a short list of gifts that would satisfy somebody like...oh...me.

1. A Paleolithic Telephone

It doesn't ring, doesn't answer, and never needs recharging. Of course, it doesn't do anything, either, but it's oh so elegant. Created by graphic designer Jennifer Daniel and her mom.

A caveman phone. Jennifer Daniel, Sandi Daniel/Flickr

2. A Perfect Hideaway

Who wouldn't want to live in a cozy, teeny weeny, grass-roofed Hobbit Home? This one (which we've gift wrapped so you can open it yourself), was built by Simon Dale in Wales for about $5,200 (he did it himself). It would be like living in a dream.

3. Wheeeee! Without Worries

Speaking of staircases, here's an attachment for people have always wanted to slide down banisters, but worry about ... umm ... collateral damage. This is the perfect gift for a wuss.

4. A Hang Drum

I don't know how they work, but musician Daniel Waples, plopped on a sidewalk in Oslo, Norway, makes it look so easy I want to try. Wikipedia says there's nothing inside a "hang" (they don't call it a drum,) but air; those knobs and bumps give it resonance, and all you have to do is remember to play the right side, as Daniel will demonstrate. ...

5. Bacon Aroma In The Morning

There's something about the sizzle and smell of bacon in the morning that makes some people instantly happy. (I'm not a bacon eater, but I know people who wiggle with pleasure when they catch a whiff from the kitchen.) Well, here's an alarm clock that wakes you up, not with a buzz, but with the wafting smell of bacon. It's the Wake N' Bacon, from designer Matty Sallin and friends.

So, if any of you out there have a hobbit-house loving, banister sliding, bacon-sniffing, telephone using, bowl-tapping friend on your shopping list ... you're all set.
